Re: Some simple recipes to tide up through
It gets sadder, I don't like anything spicy at all, I don't have pepper on anything I'm afraid. I am a very simple traditional english food eater. In fact food doesn't do it for me at all really, I'd be very happy to take a couple of pills a day for my nutritional needs and get on without wasting time eating!!

You posted while I was composing my message and searching for just the right words!

Try shutting one eye.Paul-R wrote: 23 Dec 2024, 20:35 All this talk of beetroot is making me quite squeamish. I read (speedread actually) the last half dozen posts with a wince.
If that doesn't work, shut both and speed read past the beetroot bits.

Re: Some simple recipes to tide up through
Sounds good to me although I'd probably prefer a bit of heating somewhere along the line

Re: Some simple recipes to tide up through
I made 12L of mainly carrot soup (3kg for 24p!) but half a dozen garlic corms in it, whole cloves, not mashed or chopped.
Did the same with a tuna pasta bake a few days ago.
Looking forward to beans on toast with a sprig of holly for Christmas dinner. Perhaps some garlic on the beans too. Festive!

Re: Some simple recipes to tide us through
Perhaps for clarity I should relate the story that gave me my hatred of garlic. :
Back in the spring of 1964 Watford played a testimonial friendly against Arsenal at Vicarage Road. I went to the game on my own, as 11 year olds could do in those days, and watched the Hornets win the game. The Arsenal supporters were not happy as they were a first division side while we were only a third division club and I was unfortunate enough to meet 4 of them on my way home. I used to walk towards the town centre and cut through a churchyard to get to the high street before catching the bus home. In the churchyard 4 teenage gunners cornered me, stole my Watford scarf and knocked me to the ground. Two of them then ran away but the other two kicked me while I was on the floor and then one of them spewed his garlic enriched stomach contents all over me. Fortunately at that point a group of Watford supporters came into the church yard, saw what was happening and set about taking revenge. The two Gunners were pretty bashed up by the time they had finished and I had got up and jumped into the church fountain in an attempt to rid myself of the stench.
At that point a police car turned up and they took me to the station and let me have a shower by which time Dad had got there to collect me with clean clothes but that stench has never left me and up until a few years ago I used to wretch if I caught a whiff of it. I have stabilised a bit in terms of coping with the smell in restaurants but I could never, and will never, actually get near the stuff again!! So now you know!!!

How sad that you do not appreciate good food Mick, especially as you organise all these
lunches. At 87 it is one of my treats along with a good pint of draught beer or a glass [bottle] of wine. Even a nibble of a matured cheddar is heaven!

Re: Some simple recipes to tide up through
I may have created a wrong impression with my comment about pills. The reality is that I do enjoy what I deem to be good food but my tastes are very plain and I never look on the food as being important at a lunch. The important thing is the company and the exchange of views and ideas that goes with it. I too love a pint of draught beer as well as Guinness but driving restricts that so much these days that I have Guinness 0 or Fever Tree light tonic. Favourite foods? Weetabix, bacon sandwiches, cheese in most varieties, roast potatoes, yorkshire pudding, bread and marmalade, plain steak, steak pies, walls pork sausages, toast, ham rolls and some pork pies the non peppery type !!
