I'd not be very athletic after that lot either Dormouse... I'd instead be spending a long time having a deep and meaningful conversation with Huey on the big white telephone
I absolutely love skilfully cooked beef but that love is not reciprocated
I buy plain cooked beetroots and then pickle them in Balsamic Vinegar for a few days... Lovely

I have the mind of an athlete - it is running away with itself.
I have a body designed by Michelin - it is XXL.

I mostly use cooked but not pickled beetroot. I like the pickled variety but it makes me cough so it is spoiled.

Re: Some simple recipes to tide up through
Almost a disaster on the culinary front today I do love a good quiche and when blind-baking the pastry it's essential to weight it down with ceramic beans...
For one reason or another, it's been a while since I've baked a quiche and when I went to bake one last week I could not find my beans; they must have disappeared when my kitchen was refurbished...
I managed to blind-bake with a work-around but it was not 100% satisfactory so I ordered some new ones from Amazon... They were delivered today but not to my house I was devastated
Luckily, they'd gone next door... Christmas came so close to being totally ruined...
Tomorrow I'll be quiche baking and also brewing up my special Christmas curry

Pickled beetroot every time for me, I love the rather unusual consistency of hard softness, if you know what I mean!!

Re: Some simple recipes to tide up through
On a serious note. Plain sliced beetroot is a nice side, as is lightly boiled diced carrot and diced swede ( in England ) - proper Scottish Turnip looks like a swede but is very much sweeter, not unlike Parsnip. Scottish Turnips are very good at this time of year as the frosts increase the sugars in the flesh. Neeps, as we call them, are very different to swede. Not unnaturally, they often find their way into some Stovie recipes and are a tasty addition. I have to try Parsnip in my Stovies sometime.

Re: Some simple recipes to tide up through
Here's a recipe but no measures included
1 - Have a friend give you some wild boar
2 - Give it to a friend who cuts it up
3 - Put some coarsely chopped garlic and onion in a pan and lighlty fry
4 - Add wild boar
5 - Once browned add red wine
6 - Leave gently simmering for a couple of hours adding water (if you're Jesus) or wine to stop it drying out
7 - Get a couple of eggs, 2 tablespoons of flour and milk to suit, mix and make a batter
8 - Drink some wine (Keith Floyd says you should)
9 - When the boar is nice and tender, heat the oven on high and once heated add the batter into patty tins with a little oil in each (fairy cake size)
10 - Add the batter and wait for the yorkies to be just right
11 - Whip the yorkies out, a spoonful of boar in each one and top with a slice of goats cheese
Open another bottle of wine and enjoy

Sadly I stopped reading that at line 3 Pete, I cannot tolerate anything with garlic involved so I simply stopped and set about this post!!

Re: Some simple recipes to tide up through
All this talk of beetroot is making me quite squeamish. I read (speedread actually) the last half dozen posts with a wince.
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.
