This is the charging infrastructure at Chez Falcon, and has been for the last 3½ ish years since Northumberland CC ended its freebie which we enjoyed for the first 17 months of EV ownership. As this is bargain basement electric, I have never felt the need to shell out on a "proper" home charging point. They shouldn't be, but are overpriced for both the equipment and installation and the benefit to me absolutely not worth it. The granny cable gives a nice gentle charge, kind on the longevity of the battery , and the car stands idle enough to charge it up without any inconvenience at all.

There is plenty on-road charging availability and it has expanded at pace but why would you want to pay double the price, to unnecessarily top up on the road if you don't have to :?: . We quite happily run around our stomping ground of Northumberland/Durham/Scottish Borders without regularly using on road charging. I'm far too much of a skinflint for that.

I imagine that large hub in Cheltenham will be largely used by "convenience charger-uppers" who in spite of having plenty of charge in hand will plug in at the chargers anyway, somewhere to park the car if nothing else even though the price of the "fuel" will be double that they could have put in the tank at home :-D Most of those cars in 2024 will also have larger battery capacities than my pioneering, conservatively and well-engineered Leaf, even less need or frequency to trouble the on-road-charging-network.

Ahh, that reminds me. When my carport is up I'll be wanting to have some outdoor 13A socket outlets installed; that one of yours looks just the job Neil :)

And some more lighting too...

I recently put a couple of seven-metre LED strings in son's garage as he hates the fluorescent lights. Not sure how much but less than replacing the tubes in the fluorescents.
Mains driven, waterproof and remote control operated with a choice of brightness (also annoying pulsing).
Easy to fit.

This fits in nicely with that Gibbo, spotted today. This is the solution which the owner of this car was using to charge up their car. Looks neat enough. I have seen worse with Cables draped through upstairs windows to the offside rear window of the car at such an angle to allow the cable over pavement bit to be well in excess of head height.

Quite a few brands in the "Falcon" stable :-D Would keep the 12V topped up at least.

This American Chap does a video on a bit of DIY Solar direct to Leaf. Far too long to watch of course, unless you are very very interested in such things :-D Skipped some of the waffle to this start point where he starts talking about why it is complicated to directly charge an EV traction battery from Solar Panels without some intervening battery storage for the solar generation.

Here's an Australian solution to recharging your electric car while parked on the street:

I think the council is being a bit churlish regarding an innovative approach to removing the trip hazard.

That fishing rod solution reminds me of a part of the former paraphernalia of the petrol pump infrastructure still in place in my youth. The petrol hoses over the pavement, with the nozzles tied up in a loose knot and dangling when not in use.

The one on the left is one I used to walk past regularly in the 1960's, the one on the right just a nice pic from France. If anyone has any more, head to the Garages Gallery thread here. It is a decent browse in any case even if you don't.

Where I worked as a lad we had one of those over the footpath pumps, it was also a wind up rack thing, wind to the top for a gallon the back down, took quite a while to serve the Southport Sand Co's Commer truck with their usual twenty gallons. :)
