I take very little pleasure now from the tinkering and fixing of cars and fortunately in nearly 5 years of ownership there has been little of that with the Leaf, and what has been done has all been recorded on the thread and has consisted of Rear Discs and Pads, New brake shoes and handbrake cables at MOT time. Normal sort of maintenance regardless of powertrain.

So far the thread has been mercifully free of major works. You may recall if you followed the saga at the time, that Simon (Mandrake) did a replacement of the transfer gear/reduction gear on his Leaf with a unit sourced from a breakers, in what I would describe as major work, and a bit of pioneering. Henceforth I will describe this as "the Gearbox" but its not a proper gearbox more a direct transfer of drive from the motor to the roadwheels thus, simple as ABC

The "box" with its clothes off
Image

Anyone who has ever removed a gearbox from any car whether to "do the Clutch" or for more serious gearbox work will have gone through similar steps to remove the box. With the job being pioneering a bit of energy was expended working out whether the gearbox on the Leaf could be removed without dismantling the "stack" of components ie the charger and the inverter and all the high voltage stuff. Turns out it could be removed with the removal of a few mounting bolts then removed from the side, like any other "box" on a FWD car..

The problem was solved, but the original cause never revealed. I suspect that it was nothing to do with the gears /bearings themselves very little to go wrong there, but the pawl on the parking brake which drops down and engages with a castellated ring on the primary drive coming from the motor which you will see on the "teardown" video. Saying that the replacement "box with all the gubbins" from the breaker was probably still less than the price of the pawl or ring/parking brake from Nissan, even if it was available. :-D

Simon's Saga starts pretty much here, with his videos of "the noise" if you want to follow it through

Same weather as we had Neil. At least it gave my roof repairs a good test...

Yes mine too but sadly it seems some of the water is now running beyond my tank and onto the beam and then dripping down! I'll have to notch the tank around the beam to allow it to catch them there!! Luckily the back end can be moved forward enough to permit that so that is a job before the MOT!

In a similar vein Mick, I found my garage guttering is unable to cope with a big deluge as we had yesterday... Rain overtops the sides 😯

It needs to be bigger and have a greater fall. Next project!

Hope your arrangement can be improved to overcome the issue you have when it's monsoonal 🤞

Taxed the Leaf today, one of the early adopters benefits, 5½ ish years of zero Vehicle Excise Duty. Letter with the reminder saying changes afoot for April 2025. Always going to happen. As it stands, because the BB Leaf is registered between 1st March 2001 and 31st March 2017 it will move into the first band that has a VED value currently £20/Annum.

Isn't just an Electric thing...Low emission cars of any powertrain registered between 1st March 2001 and 31st March 2017 also qualify for the lowest VED rate.
Electric and low emission cars registered between 1 March 2001 and 31 March 2017
These vehicles will move to the first band that has a VED value. This is £20 for 2024 but is subject to change for 2025.
Same band as Jim's Citroen C3 Picasso I would think, which currently also enjoys zero VED.

Indeed it does Neil, although I expect not for much longer... You may have seen I've done my best to offset any VED rises in the budget by renewing Bluebell's as early as I possibly could...

I may have played a blinder - unless Ms Raver decides to make all cars over 30 years old free of VED and MoT. Pigs may fly too but you never know ;)

What is one of the "joys" of bargain basement motoring that everyone on here will have done if they have ever picked up a few spanners, and given DIY car maintenance and repair a go.

A visit to a scrapyard.

For information this is one of the few specialist EV dismantlers based in Newry Northern Ireland, but the general trade also can provide parts as Simon, (Mandrake) sourced for his "Reduction/transfer Gear" replacement for his Leaf.

Today saw the arrival of this into the Falcon fleet so a bit of line drawing on the Bargain Basement electric thread.
I don't intend giving a blow by blow account, as has been done for the original BB Leaf. That has been done, and hopefully been informative.

This is one of the top 3 of cars I have been excited to acquire, and a bit of a departure in terms of its newness.
2023 reg, 16,000 miles, and what I consider to be excellent value for money and a move on. Did look at a Red 21 reg MG5 Estate, very nice but more of a "that might do" car in my mind. After seeing the newer Leaf and the price being only a couple of grand more for a virtually new car, and in a gorgeous colour in my view the deal was done in rapid time. November does seem to be a decent time to be buying cars price wise, and surprise surprise the insurance calculation came up with a refund following submission of the amended details with the AA for the new car.
