A question. The correct Eolys fluid. If I remember there correctly. There are a few different versions? What type do I need to get?
Hi Corne. Your build date is 11097 and your have a Euro 4 engine, so you need Eolys 176 or Infineum F7995.

You should have a green click fit connector.

Hi Marc

I believe I do have the green connector.

Does this fluid look like the correct type? Just did a quick search.

Hi everyone.

Still on holiday and been driving the C6 everywhere. So far did 1800 miles or 2900 kilometers. Overall average has been 25mpg. Mostly long distances but a very hilly area of the country. I’m a bit disappointed, but oh wel. It is ok. I did however do a diagnostic. Your words came true Marc. There was a faultcode stored. P0401 exhaust gas recycling. Excessive flow detected. The wording makes me think the gasses are leaking past the plate that I have put in. Or is this a standard code for the thing I have done?

Apart from that it has been a joy to drive her. Since we are at a much lower level (being very close to the coast) Eloise has quite alot of guts from pull-away. Very little turbo-lag. It will be something to get used to when I am back home....

I also did a check to see when last a regeneration was done and it seems that the car does a regeneration about every 500km or 310 ish miles. Noticed when I left home the particulate level according to the diagnostic was 62% and at the moment is at 42%. Hope the long distances has been good for her.

Having some thinkingtime... I’d like to change the glow plugs quite soon. Is there any better or more efficient glowplug than OEM beru? Seems like certain glowplugs have a higher glowing temperature and ofcourse a higher temperature for longer which is good for post heating phase.

What do you guys think?

So P0401 says Air system fault: Amount of air measured higher than the setting. That's because the EGR has been blocked and it's complaining Corne. Normally, if this was on a vehicle where this hadn't been done, then it would be clogged or blocked.

That’s the ‘normal’ fault that mine also logs because of the same reason.
For the Dutch mot this is not an issue as it doesn’t put the engine light on. It does show on the testers system so passing a smoke test is required to pass the mot. As the dpf system is working but only the egr part has no flow of exhaust gasses, it passes this test easily.

Hi Marc.

Fair enough I understand what you mean. Do you think the regeneration happens too often? Or is that normal.

@furriegurrie. Thanks. I am reluctant to ask more questions surrounding this so I will steer to other questions. Lol.

Thats why I asked the question in the beginning. Is there a fixed amount of miles or engine starts or whatever that triggers the regeneration?

The regeneration sequences are variable. Frequency depends on driving conditions - but generally longer journeys with less frequent stopping and starting and at consistent speeds will result in longer distances before regeneration. This will be in part to the naturally higher exhaust gas temperatures at speed that allow the particles to be burned off without assistance.

Generally, as members should know, we don't allow discussions about emissions defeating of any kind as you rightly acknowledge Corne :-D I would point out though, that the EGR system is here at present, like it or not, but it does have a self-checking / cleaning and anti jamming strategy.

This is how a typical system does this:

Initialisation of the stops of the electric EGR valve
To mitigate ageing and clogging of the EGR valve, the engine ECU performs an automatic initialisation of the lower stop when the valve is closed (during full load, foot off or power latch).
The upper stop is calculated by adding 3 V to the position registered at the lower stop, the upper stop being updated at each initialisation of the lower stop. Taking account of the stop positions initialised automatically and comparing them with the original position initialised at the factory, the engine ECU adapts the setting for control of the EGR valve. (Initialisation of stops is not possible if the battery voltage is lower than 10 V or higher than 14 V).

Cleaning of the electric EGR valve
To prevent soiling of the electric EGR valve, there is a cleaning phase on switching on the ignition. This cleaning phase consists of 5 successive opening and closing cycles.

At the end of the cleaning cycle, the engine management ECU tries to reach the upper stop (maximum opening) of the electric EGR valve:
  • If during this attempt a blockage is detected, the cleaning cycle is repeated
  • If, after this second attempt, the valve remains stuck, a fault appears
Cleaning of the by-pass of the EGR Heat Exchanger
The engine ECU operates the cleaning (2 up/downs) of the by-pass of the EGR heat exchanger when the engine is running.
Cleaning is activated if the following conditions are met:
  • Deceleration (Engine speed between 4000 and 1200 rpm)
  • Coolant temperature between 60°C and 120°C
Antisticking the electric EGR valve
The engine ECU estimates the state of sticking of the electric EGR valve, as a function of the following factors:
  • Speed of movement of the gate of the electric EGR valve
  • Errors in regulation of the position of the electric EGR valve
If the electric EGR valve begins to stick or sticks, the engine ECU controls the electric EGR valve via a conventional control signal, followed by a vibratory signal to make the electric EGR valve vibrate and thus avoid sticking.

The amplitude of the vibratory signal depends on the degree of sticking detected by the engine ECU. The antisticking strategy is used only during phases where the electric EGR valve is being operated.

Hi Marc

Wow it is actually a very intricate system! Actually amazing. The fact that the system works even for a year is quite unbelievable.

Well... a slight different subject haha. I talked about the glow plugs. The standard glowplug is steel tip type glowplugs. There seems to be a ceramic tipped glow plug on the market which has a higher temperature at startup than conventional steel glow plugs. A difference of 800 and 1300 degrees celsius. Apparently can assist with soot burnoff. Does anyone have any info regarding this?

I did notice this morning when I first started the car in the morning that she was sounding like a diesel which hasn’t warmed up properly. Thus I want to replace the glow plugs. It is the second morning ever that it happened..

Ceramic glow-plugs — Maybe a caution?
You might want to read this...

See that much-respected BERU also offer them, but they aren't their recommendation for all engines.

Thanks Chris.

Yeah well. Clearly there are downside to good things. I’m wondering if there really are any benefits to using the ceramic glowplugs. Considering it operates at 7 volts clearly puts you in a disadvantage if you use it on a car with a 11v system.

Hi everyone

Seems like I have to do some more maintenance as per usual. I noticed that the rear suspension bushes need some attention. I am unsure if the arm is called the rear lower control arm but in the picture it is number 10 and 11 I need the rubber bushes for. What is the correct name for them? .

Im trying to look for the bushes on fleabay but it’s been difficult to get.

Hi Corne. Both are called Rear Suspension Flexible Joints ( :-D ) funnily enough.

(10) Part number: 9801049980 (note the original part number was 5131C4, but since superseded)
(11) Part Number: 5131C3
