The first Citroen C6 in South Africa aka ‘Eloise’

Hi everyone.

Well. The subject says it all. After quite a while and alot of patience my C6 arrived from the UK in South Africa.

After I received Eloise the first issue was the Aircon system which had no gas in it. Fortunately all it needed was a regas. 550 grams and she was back. A good AC is a must here as our temperatures regularly gets to 37 degrees celsius.

That was only the beginning.
A list of faults was on the display. Handbrake failure, esp/ebd failure.

After connecting the diagnostic system it shows that 3 of the 4 wheel sensors are faulty. Both front and left rear. And a cable fault on the handbrake.

So first thing I thought. Lets find the fault on the handbrake. Whilst someone operated the handbrake in the car I looked at the rear calipers to see if they operated. Immediately saw the right rear caliper was seized. So only one handbrake actually worked. So there begins the process of repairing it. Both rear wheels off and dismantled both rear calipers.

Wow what a surprise. Never understood the rust and salt that you guys suffer from. Until now!

Ended up beadblasting the caliper and the cradle!! To repair the faulty mechanism of the caliper was nothing more than a simple cleaning of the rust. Worked a charm.
Afterwards did zinc-electroplating on the calipers.
The difference was astounding seals were all still perfect so no need to change now. But will order some for the future. I just didn't have new ones on hand. So
This will have to do for now.

Next writeup will be about the ABS sensors. Hope in the future someone may have some use for this writeup. There are still lots to come. Hope you guys enjoy the blog and pictures.

:welc: Eloise to the FCF. You will be able to find out all you need for your owner to keep you in good shape. Try looking for a member called "Trainman", and he had a nice long post about his C6.

That's great Corne, glad to see she has arrived to her new hone. I can see this being a good source for other owners and now I know where to send my C5 Calipers to - what a difference!

So much to learn. So much to do.

Had my first ‘new’ fault code. I had a decent long 500km run. I overtook a car at almost full throttle. Suddenly I felt a loss of power and the engine light came on and the message of de pollution fault. Came on. Normal power resumed and I arrived home a few kms later. Will connect the compute tomorrow and see what faultcodes come up. Any idea what might trigger that specific code?

Only thing I did was 100km before the fault-code I filled up Eloise with 10ppm ultra low sulphur diesel. She was half a tank when I filled her up. Might there be too much Eolys dosed? I might mention that when I first started the car on African soil the exhaust gasses smelled very, well, diesely. Like a diesel without a particulate filter.... possibly a blocked DPF?

I am just thinking of possible problems.

Anytime Marc. Send them this way!! Getting some new fluid so I think the next time I electroplate the caliper the result will be more to my liking. But it looks better

Hi Corne, please tell me you didn’t put any EOLYS DPF additive directly into the fuel tank?

There is a separate additive tank next to the fuel tank for that and should only be topped up when the display tells you it is low. This won’t happen until somewhere at he 75 to 100k miles. It has to be done using a special filling kit and must be the correct additive for your build date, as some additives cannot be mixed.

The engine ECU controls the dosing and metering of the additive pump. The diagnostic tool must then be used to tell the engine ECU that the additive has been added and then reset to zero.

You never put any additive into the fuel tank directly - ever. I hope that explains the system. I’ll let you know the correct additive in the morning, as I’m not as my main rig now.

Most definitely no. I’ve never put any Eolys in the car at all. Nothing. Only Diesel.

The faultcode fixed itself. So I have no reference. I did however connect the computer. The only faultcode that is reoccurring is pre-post heating relay circuit.
She has 91000miles on the clock and I have no way of actually knowing if it has been refilled or needs refilling. I will wait for the computer to tell me. I just thought since the car wasn't empty apon refilling but rather half. That created an overdose of Eolys injected by the car itself.

When was the fuel filter last changed?
Mine very occasionally does this and I then find an entry in the log with an P1156 (or P1165, don’t remember) which points to fuel pressure. The error is not showing in the injection ecu. Probably because it clears it self after a few restarts.

@ Sticky @ Furrie: I think Corne's already done that operation as I posted up the procedure a while ago.

@Corne. That's ok then. The engine ECU knows exactly how much fuel is in the tank and again when you fill up and only doses additive according to the amount of fuel put in, so there is nothing to concern yourself about the dosing. The other faults concerning the pre-post heating are generally to do with the glow plugs and is a common message on just about every HDi I have owned. I tend to ignore that unless there are other associated faults. Apart from starting (where needed) they have a part to play in regeneration and can be switched on for a few seconds to increase temperature in the post heating phase.

I did change the fuel filter. I must say the filter was pitch-black. I tried blowing through the filter opening and it took serious effort to blow through the filter media. Date stamp on the filter was 2013.... Car was bought from a deceased estate in 2015 and she stood parked in a garage till June this year. The dealer I bought the car from was extremely helpful, got quite a bit of spares from him that he suggested I think of replacing. cambelt and ofcourse the diesel filter. Is there a possibility that the filter may be blocked again after 600km? Guess it is a possibility....

I don't understand the idea of replacing filters at extended intervals suggested at +- 45000km. It is silly! I'd rather replace the filter at my normal intervals of 15000km. I don't care what manufacturers say. filters and oil, all done every 15000km.

@furriegurrie I think I did see that P1156 error code before I wiped the faultcodes to see what came back. possibly that was due to the dirty filter?

That's a very mucky filter Corne. When I change mine the old one looks no worse than the new one, maybe something going on in the tank that bears investigation - there are instances of a biological diesel contamination - microbial or fungal.
Could be due to yours being unused for an extended period so it wouldn't get the regular flushing that most tanks would have.

100% agree with Steve ^ Corne. That level of gunk can only really be from bacterial growth in the diesel tank where it's been left standing - and worse where the tank has been left not full.

I can get hold of a product of liqui moly. Will post a picture of the bottle before I buy it. I guess it is worth a shot to use it and see what happens
