But things may get worse with the new chatbots emerging, as described by Tom Scott.

mickthemaverick wrote: 14 Feb 2023, 10:47 I met Bob for lunch last Friday and we went to our usual haunt, The Royal Oak in Farnham Common, where we enjoyed our usual couple of hours catch up over the usual lunch. However when we went to the bar we were told the pub is now cashless and we must pay by card. Normally one of us pays the whole bill by card while the other hands over appropriate cash between us. Thus we did not have a problem but the point is: now you have no choice so your visit will be automatically recorded!! BB strikes into the very heart of our social lives!!!
I wonder if that's legal Mick, I would challenge them, cash is legal tender and I don't see how they can refuse it especially if you've already consumed the food.

I have to agree there Gibbo, however I suspect it is one of those "Who's going to bother to challenge it? " situations where retailers take the law into their own hands to suit their own needs. I may pop in one day and order a drink with only cash in my pocket and see what happens!! 8-)

They can refuse to accept cash if they want, apparently.

".............The government responded: “The government does not plan to mandate cash acceptance. Businesses are able to choose the forms of payment they accept. The government’s proposals for legislation support cash acceptance.
“While the government recognises the ability to transact in cash remains important to millions of people across the UK, particularly those in vulnerable groups, it remains the choice of individual businesses as to whether to accept or decline any form of payment, including cash or card.”"

https://www.conveniencestore.co.uk/dear ... 47.article

"........Martin Lewis has issued a warning to shoppers who rely on paying by cash.
According to the Money Saving Expert, shops are legally allowed to refuse cash payment for items as long as they are not discriminating against the customer.
The issue was mentioned on the ITV's 'The Martin Lewis Money Show', where the discussion of legal tender was brought up.
Lewis responded to this saying: "No, they are not breaking any rules."
"You are allowed to take card only as long as it's not discriminatory for race or disability or something." "

The important thing is to offer to pay the debt with Legal Tender. If they refuse to accept it walk out the pub (after filming the evidence of your offer and their refusal) and enjoy your free meal. Their choice, but again who can be bothered :?: and no doubt next time you turned up for your usual enjoyable lunch you and Bob would have been dubbed the cash martyrs and be barred by the management.

This is what the bank of England say about it
https://edu.bankofengland.co.uk/explain ... gal-tender
Legal tender has a narrow technical meaning which has no use in everyday life. It means that if you offer to fully pay off a debt to someone in legal tender, they can’t sue you for failing to repay.

In this case they would have to make it very clear everywhere before entering the premise and ordering that they do not accept cash and to ensure you have other forms of payment before ordering. That would cover them I suspect, but if not, then you could argue that you have valid means of legal tender to pay and if they won't accept it without having made it clear previously, then that's tough luck. And don't leave a tip.

There is a local chip shop that takes only cash - a large sign about it though.
Same with my hairdresser. Caught someone out the first time I was there.

I can understand businesses not accepting cards to minimise their own costs but a hospitality business not accepting cash in a society which has a significant number of people who do not have another payment method available seems crazy to me!! :(

Before the thread probably goes into its previous state of hibernation, this is the 100th post so a further little look at Alexa and her clones finding out stuff about us with their AI eavesdropping.

Well, all is not rosy in their financial garden. Huge investment by the tech companies in development but they haven’t as yet discovered a way of those products making money. We don’t trust them to make purchases,

Just ask Alexa or the Internet

“Alexa, will you ever make money ?“

Microsoft's new AI-powered Bing search engine generated false information on products, places, and could not accurately summarize financial documents, according to the company's promo video used to launch the product last week.
