I thought the "Red" bit was meant to be a prism lens for the driver to see if the sidelight bulb was illuminated from the driver's seat

You may well be right...seems a decent suggestion. Bit delve into the net may confirm.deuchebleu wrote: 06 Aug 2024, 21:54 I thought the "Red" bit was meant to be a prism lens for the driver to see if the sidelight bulb was illuminated from the driver's seat

That's as I've always understood it. Bulb failure warning devices are nothing newNewcastleFalcon wrote: 06 Aug 2024, 22:09You may well be right...seems a decent suggestion. There were some cars from the fifties that had a clear prismatic light-pipe that did that although I am at a loss to name one.deuchebleu wrote: 06 Aug 2024, 21:54 I thought the "Red" bit was meant to be a prism lens for the driver to see if the sidelight bulb was illuminated from the driver's seat

This is described as
Lucas 1130 Type Sidelamp-Red Dot-Sidelight/Clear Indicator

Lucas 1130 Type Sidelamp-Red Dot-Sidelight/Clear Indicator
The Lucas 1130 sidelamp is produced in many different variants , each have subtle differences, whether it be the lens type, the bulb holder, addition of a Lucas emblem to the top, or even the way in which the body is manufactured. This particular version has a double filament 12/5 watt bulb installed, providing sidelight and clear indicator functions. The lens is frosted glass within a chrome mounting ring, and the lamp body features a Red Lucas Medallion on the top, which acts as a tell tale. Supplied complete with bulb, base gasket and fixing bolts. |

Readers and followers of the thread should be quite familiar with the red tell-tale. This time it's on a Jaguar XK 150

Here is the inaugural entry on the FCF rear lighting at night spotters guide inspired by the recent whatsthisthen?
Rears only for this, as that is the view you get most commonly, and the front lighting can only be deciphered as distinctive when the car is stationery or moving slowly, and any spotters guide is completely redundant with oncoming traffic at any sort of speed through the brightness and the glare.

Just a load more blingyshite that does little to improve any aspect of driving or car ownership.
Have to say I haven't a clue what mine look like. My son used to collect my car at 22:30-ish and I would see if any lights were out as he drove down the street but these days I only see my car when I go to his house for it, so have never seen the rear lights. Must fix the headlight. One day.
