Thanks Marc. I had wondered about a repetition on the Pug 508 of all the woes associated with X7 steering racks on the C5.

I've not seen any mention in other Pug places of this rack issue so I presume it only affects the early X7 model of the the C5, trust Citroen to cock up the redesign  . I'm loosely researching a replacement for my Xantia estate which is approaching its 20th birthday.

Unfortunately as there are a multitude of rack part numbers for the X7 - it would take too long to cross reference every one. They are different for the engine types / power steering types etc., so you have a stack of options before you start comparing. There is no way to tell what the differences are as they are visually very similar.

Which is why I went for a reconditioning of the cars rack rather than a a "second hand" recon unit.

If they're visually similar then surely they might suffer the same problem if the pinion is in a position where it's exposed to wet?

Well guys,

Rack fitted so much easier with subframe removed allowing good access to fit the pipes onto rack etc. Rack feels tighter but that maybe due in part to, new wishbones and drop links fitted.
Handling and ride much better more like a citroen.
Hopefully no more dramas for a little while.
