No smoke this morning but engine was very rough on first start up uneven idling almost cutting out struggled to get off the drive. Ok once started and driven , but got to work and noticed stram coming from engine bay, lifted bonnet and found the pipe from expansion bottle to rad had come off and dumped its contents over the egr and everywhere around. Pushed it back on and refilled didnt take much maybe a litre, drained a bit off snd put some more anti freeze in (OAT)Is thete a clip on this push fit pipe? It seems very easy to pull off so have cable tied and taped it on .

When you get a minute pop up the VIN for your latest VAN as I might have an old one and don't want to give you wrong info.

In the interim, you should have some sort of clip fastening it on - this is what I have for your old VIN - number 71:

Ok, so same VIN (but should be a 5 not an 'S' after the VF7**************[VIN obfuscated, can be read by forum staff] :-D

So this should be the engine - a DV6UTED4:

Rich EGR.PNG
Location of EGRCylinder Head and EGR
So if you don't have this engine - Panic! :-D

Is this not the egr? Runs from intercooler into the front of rocker cover then into the turbo . Actually the pipe just in view on right is the one that goes to the turbo

If it's the cold air intake feeding the airbox, Marc, it won't cause a lack of air. If it's leaking there, it just means the system is sucking in (warmer) air from the engine bay, rather than cool air from the front of the car.

That looks like a butterfly valve, probably the EGR "Throttle" which resides downstream of the EGR itself.

I'm still unsure what's going on with that engine TBH Mike - the EGR location doesn't seem to correspond with where it should be on Rich's variant as per his VIN, which made me wonder if the engine has been replaced at some point and that, along with the coolant and various hoses that seem to be unclipped or missing clips is also possibly a bit of a giveaway / concern....

Yes, I see where you're coming from, what with the coolant hose detaching, but the cold air intake is nothing to worry about much, just a crap fitment design. Though you may have overlooked the fact Rich asked for location of MAF, whereas you provided the diagram for the EGR? :D
Hopefully tomorrow's diagnostic will give some more meaningful input as to why it's running poorly, smoking and smelling.

I can't see anything about the MAF request (and still can't :-D ), but this is where it the MAF is SUPPOSED to be for this engine - item 10 - which at least looks about right from the pictures :-D That's something at least!

It's not the EGR valve, it's as Mike suggests an air doseur - not sure exactly what it does, but I suspect it works in tandem with the EGR valve to restrict fresh air flow and preferentially admit exhaust gas when the EGR logic calls for it. If it's failed closed, then it will cause all sorts of running problems!! The EGR valve, will be, as your pic shows, buried down the back of the engine. It's under the air piping (and fuel filter) under the blue screwdriver in the pic above. Extract from service.citroen showing the doseur:
