Finally got around to the plugs today, first 2 (gear box end) were an absolute breeze, as suggested plug 3 and the 8mm ratchet spanner gave up! That nut had been significantly rounded before, replaced with a new one as a matter of course, that one was a bit trickier, but just over the half an hour mark to get it buttoned up,
Don't think I really need to say how the last one went....... ;-) other than Oh my word I now Ache! :-D
Will find out in the morning how it fires!

Tis I'd say a 95%improvement on starting now, still a little chug here and there but on the whole spot on!

If you kept the old ones, would be interesting if you could test them. Tip should glow orange hot within 5secs or so. Would help confirm the cause.

Also, worth taking a look at the ring-eye connectors on the underside of the GP relay (the big box). There will be two large ones; look to see whether there's any sign of overheating on the connectors and the adjacent cable insulation. Good idea to undo these connectors (small nut) and thoroughly clean up (back to bright metal) the terminal stud and eye-connector surfaces. One of these connections is permanently Battery+, so disconnect one main battery terminal before starting work.

Also, try waiting a full 10secs+ after switching on the IGN, before cranking. Does this help give a clean start? (With a cold engine, the GPs will carry on operating for a while after the light has gone out.)

Funnily enough i dropped the glow plugs in the bin in the shed today when tidying and thought i should test them really!
I usually wait fpr approximately 7seconds after the plug light outs befpre cranking, there is now minimal apparent smoke on starting,
Testing the gps is doable with jump leads from the battery?

Yes - a single jump lead is all you need. Polarity doesn't matter.

Well ive just emptied the bin amd only found 3! Somehow the bin must have been acting as a port to an alternate dimension!
Will give them a bash tomorrow when i get 5, she's got the car for a bit as hers is in gettong some warranty work done,

My old Synergie did that at 220k miles, even with fresh glow plugs. Never had any longstanding issues (till the timing belt snapped)

My 1.9 DW8 was very similar to yours too, even on diesel. Replaced the glow plugs and it was fantastic. Now it only does that on cold mornings with SVO :)

Easy bench test is a jump lead on the negative battery + glow plug, then touch the positive terminal on the top of the plug. I had two dead ones.

I'm quite jealous of you with your Xantia XUD9. It's on my "one day" list, but I'd imagine they're thinning out.

Righty ho, Of the three glowplugs i found , 2 worked 1 defunkt, i will see if i can locate the missing one as it surely can't be all that far from the other three.........

One dead one is enough to create a lumpy and slightly smoky start.
Hope the stray turns up.
