I've had other garages do engine changes for me when I'm stacked out with work, I've had them not tighten stater motor wiring up, finger tight, but not nipped up on a rachet.

As regards your clutch arm, i know he's your mate, doesnt take 5 mins to double check. The click could of been anything.

The synergie cluches I've done required a small crow bar or big flat screwdriver to pop the thrust bearing into the clip on the fingers of the clutch. I'd be surprised if it just popped in on its own when man handling the box back in.

That's a very good point.

Can I ask how you have managed to bleed the older Xantia type system where it hasn't had the system replaced with the new type slave cylinder?

I know Citrojim made a brass adapter and I've read the thread about using a syringe and drilling the 3mm pin out. All a bit of a risky faff in my view. If it ain't broke, don't fix it! So what's the best way of bleeding it back up.

My mate has ordered a replacement cylinder in and sent me a photo but the replacement cylinders only appear to be of use where the system has already had the replacement type from Citroen beforehand which also used a nipple. As you may well know, the factory system never had a bleed nipple.

The only system i had difficulty with which required me to bleed it was a 806. The driver had turned the clutch and flywheel blue, it had melted the thrust bearing in place and he jumped on the clutch pedal and it broke.

The clave cylinder on that had a bleed nipple, that cylinder was original from factory, twist and lock into place on the gearbox and it was a 2000 X reg.

The rest of the clutches ive done have been left out the way and the system not disturbed.

And therein lies the rub. It never ceases to amaze me how, when people give basic instructions, they expect the other side to fill in the blanks to perfection but when the other side follows those basic instructions absolutely the one giving the instructions gets the hump.

That's the way public sector contracts are drawn up Eddie, some politician/civil servant has a 'good idea' then keeps changing the spec after the contract's awarded and grumbling that the budget's overspent.
Man is, by nature, a lazy beast, he does not need twice encouraging to do nothing.

I think it sounds like you got what you paid for on this tbh and no come back - albeit I do understand why you feel you didn't get what you wanted.

Need to just accept what is done and sort the remaining issues with the help of your mate I think.

I asked Halfords to regas my air conditioning.

It made next to no difference, and they didn't offer any conclusive opinion on the lack of improvement.

Maybe I should have gone first to an air conditioning specialist, but at least I assume Halfords did the job actually asked.

The post above is the perfect example of how business really works. You are charged for the work that is carried out. Most else is your assumptions or expectation that has not been charged for. Less you have a quotation for something you want, most work is basically an estimate. I would move on in a positive way and try get car fixed with additional and needed work.

Many thanks for the all the replies some that I construe as positive, some as negative but replies and thoughts nonetheless. I wanted to get a balanced view to see if I was being unreasonable.

Of course, when I used to go to garages back in the late 80's when cars were less complex and, I was going to say I don't think hydraulic clutches even existed but I've just remembered that my 1969 Trumph Vitesse has one, it was a lot simpler because things were engineered properly i.e. Triumph have a bleed nipple. It just goes to remind me painfully at our crap Citroens really are but we all still love them for our own reasons usually the ride.

I might even point my mate to this post as he absolutely detests forum mechanics. He has a view that they are all 'experts' and will never accept that there are people out there who can form a reasoned view or even know what they are talking about on forums. He's obviously spent to much time on 'normal' forums where that might perhaps be the case.

We are looking at it later today. I think he has done a modification (which I strictly told him I didn't want anything messing with) as we are going to fit a replacement cylinder and bleed that up.

I was quite looking forward to doing Jim's mod with the self-engineered motorcycle nipple and adapter.

I would have to say in defence of THIS forum at least, is that there are opinions of course, but there is also a great deal of expertise, experience and of course technical information provided,. And on many cases that is more than a lot of garages out there!

Well said!

I shouldn't have to defend this forum. It really irritates me that my mate has these views and just seems so blinkered regarding forums. He's probably never been on this forum. He always seems to have an opposing answer if I quote anything from the forum.

Just at my mate's now and he thinks the slave cylinder has failed. He can see the rod is intact by the pedal but there is no pressure being made when I push the clutch pedal down. There is absolutely NO resistance to the pedal.

The funny thing is there appeared to be a bit of resistance in pulling the pedal back up.

Any thoughts on this?

Does anyone know how the master cylinder comes out so I can check the seals? It has the same damned connector as the slave with the pin that would need to be drilled out but there is no way you could possibly drill it out in that location.
