That looks a neat bit of protection, that should keep the weather out, and gets around the problem of "the lump".
Needs to be done before any problems arise. Wonder how many owners would do that? I certainly would.

Just wanted to share my modification. I've used a cv boot to protect the pinion shaft. I'll let you know in 12 months if its worked but can't see why it won't.
Well done Nico, I am assuming my Trackrod end gaiter was version 1, fixing around the lump was tricky, but you version 2 (If we call it that) is a better and probably creates a better seal, as version 1 only sealed around the rubber on the bottom of the steering bulkhead gasket buy luck and was a pain.

I'm about to embark on this, having nursed the car through the last two years with a seeping rack. So I managed to pick up a 'new' rack that has been on the shelves somewhere for a while, about 6 months ago, and now its time to have it fitted . Nico, your mod looks like it should be pretty effective, so I intend to follow your lead. It looks like you are just relying on the tension in the boot to make a good seal at the base is the case?

I'll let you know how I get on.

Mine is still going, I have only used just over a litre of fluid in a year. I like the leaking seal - it makes the steering lighter. 8-)

You must have a blind MOT tester then Peter!

I must admit I was surprised when he didn't mention it - but it was pouring with rain and soaking wet underneath. I must try and arrange it for a wet day next year.

Some people get all the luck! I had a right jobsworth who spotted my paltry leak - but needed doing I suppose....

I was told by my MOT tester that a rack leak would have to leave a visible puddle on the floor in front of him before he would fail it.

I think standards vary according to the temperament of the tester, ours is a lovely chap.

Right, in that case, for the next MOT I shall be turning up with either a case of beer, a bunch of flowers or a Heisenberg compensator which should cover all the bases.

:-D My chap is very good, he doesn't fail for niggling things and if there is anything that needs fixing he gives me a list and I take it away and fix them. No extra charge for a retest.

I could be wrong but i think in the recent past as a rule of thumb if your vehicle left a pool of fluid greater than the size of a 50p coin in 20 mins then it was classed as a major leak and therefore a danger to other road users as the rate of leakage with the vehicle being driven would leave a trail of fluid.

Yes, I think we will have to ban 'Steering Racks' from the Forum as every time someone mentions it, another swine rack fails.
