Many thanks Marc, really helpful.

In the picture the item shown below the egr valve, looks like the turbo. Do you happen to know if : in the diagram there is a pipe that runs from the egr valve to the turbo, is this a vacuum pipe to a vacuum operated waste gate? If so do you know the bar pressure to operate the gate?
Many thanks for your time and help.

Ok, so here's the Air Circuit info that I think you are after:

Check - Vacuum Pump
C5-MK-I-Air-Circuit.png
  • Connect the tool [ 1] to the vacuum pump (1).
  • Start the engine.
  • The vacuum value should be 0,8 bar at idle speed.
Turbocharging Pressure Regulation Solenoid Valve

DW10ATED engine (which yours is)
Connect the tool [ 1] between the turbocharge pressure regulation valve (3) and electrovalve (2).
Compare the values read with those of the table below.
Engine SpeedPressure Measurement
780 rpm 0,6 bar 4000 rpm 0,25 bar
Pressure regulation valve

DW10DT and DW10ATED engines.
  • Connect the tool [ 1] to the valve (3).
  • Apply a vacuum of 0,5 bar to activate the shaft "a" : The shaft "a" should move by 12 ± 2 mm.
If you need the info for checking the Turbo Pressure (which needs to be done while driving under load and through the gears) let me know - but if the above will suffice it will save me work - not a problem though if you need it :-D

Sorry Marc :-D I've just been out there hacking the heads off the dandelions, haven't got round to the first cut of the lawns yet, today's the first day that it's been dry here for the last month, lawns are more moss than grass at the moment. :x

I used to have that image you've posted on my computer and would have put it up myself but it seems to have escaped.

There is a pressure regulator on the back of the HP pump, I have had all sorts of problems with these, from not starting when hot to hunting and limp home mode. They are quite easy to change. The main problem seems to be blockage of the internal filter which is a stainless steel tube with lots of tiny holes in it, I have never bee able to effectively clean one but they are about on ebay for not very much money.

Update.

Over the weekend I checked out the vacuum circuit and found a faulty turbo vacuum solenoid. The solenoid vacuum pulsed on and off rapidly under load and it made the noise that I have been searching for. So I have ordered a new one and will let people know what if any improvements it makes. Big thank you for the help and support received.

So, I have fitted the new turbo solenoid and this has stopped the noise. I have also removed the EGR valve assembly and cleaned it. Interestingly the EGR was not that coked up but it was not moving freely either. The surprise was how restricted the EGR gas cooler was. Most of the gas flow tubes were blocked, which took some cleaning out.
So the fuel consumption is now 36mpg town and around 40 mpg town and 50 mph cruise, 30 miles journey 20 town and 10 cruise. The engine feels more responsive, and climbs the rev range easier. Still need to work on the mpg though.

Hi, I need advice again please.
Does anyone know which sensors or what switches on and off the two solenoid valves ( EGR & Turbo).
Thanks.

The engine ECU controls these systems. I.e. The injection ECU has maps that it uses to control the opening of the EGR valve depending on information received from the speed of the engine, the load (via the accelerator position) and the engine coolant temperature.

Hi, I need advice again please.
Is there a way to check which diesel fuel filter type (shape) you have without taking it out of the canister?
Thanks

I would guess that, by looking up the VIN, it should be possible to find out what make of fuelling system was fitted when she left the factory, and that should include the fuel filters.
