Thought I'd mention some of my woes.
A 2009 2.0Hdi manual C5 X7 Saloon exclusive.

1 - (160km - 180km) I had an intermittent pollution warning - turns out it was the temp sensor on the exhaust.
2 - (180km) I needed new rear discs after drivers side rear floating calliper stopped floating. (note the star bolts to remove callipers were fused shut, so I gave the job to local tyre place much to their annoyance!!)
3 - (160km - 180km) I see smoke sometimes from rear of the engine, I haven't figure out what that is yet.
4 - (165km) I had the following parts changed for me: front suspension balljoints both sides.
5 - (180km) I now have to change rear suspension drop link.
6 - (180km) I now have to do the passenger cv boot too.

You don't say what year your X7 is. Petrol or diesel? What size engine? Type of gearbox?

Could you put these details into your signature or car details?

Hi folks,

I think I already included my steering rack which failed circa 85k circa 2013 but if someone can add other bits to the tally sheet for me please.(having just had another fail)

The vehicle is a C5 exclusive saloon model. 2.0 HDI (136) 2008 registration. Currently 163,000 miles.

The steering rack failed due to corrosion and seal failure on the column shaft.

Front hydraulic pipe failed by fracture circa 2014. This was the low pressure one which goes to the rack (so may have been damaged during the rack change - especially as the garage also cracked the LDS tank!)

Front right hydraulic strut failed MOT due to excessive leakage at 99,500 miles (2013)

Air on condenser first failed 2012, (62k) again in 2016 (139k) and again 2019. (161k)

Drivers front window mechanism (broken short cable due to corrosion) failed 2019 (161k)

Other than this the car has done well. I do not count 1 set of replacement discs as these are expected service items). Likewise cam belt and Elon’s)

Whilst some folk have been unfortunate, this car has done me well. The above are really the only bills other than routine service items so I can’t complain.

Thanks to whoever can update the log.

You should now be able to go back and tick additional options - I have changed permissions to make this available so you can do it yourself now hopefully.

Also so more issues
(185km) passenger window cable snapped - sponge from speaker fell off, blocked the door drain, and pulley corroded.
(190km) rough idle sometimes - fixes when restart car, happens again while idling after a drive.
(190km) driver seat will not move back/forward, just clicking noise. other movements work
why?

I have had only 2 things after 10 years and 180.000 km. Wire to opening the front bonnet, and the hose for the rear window wiper sprinkler. Of course I have changed brakes in front and rear, but after 180.000 km. That is nothing.

Hi,

I cannot really participate (yet), as I got mine since 90k miles, and has now 91k miles :D Should be around 10k miles more in the 6 months ownership, but the Corona came around at the same time as the Citroen (no link proven yet !)

But, I would had:
- AC pipe from condenser to compressor (or opposite?). I think it is common on the PSA cars, it is even an ECR for the X7. I got mine with this pipe broken
- CV gaiter. When looking for mine, I found a lot for sale with it mentionned on the MOT history. Mine has one broken... Looks like a real PITA to change, don't know what to do about yet (wait and change the full CV ?)

Regarding the steering rack, is it mainly due to corrosion ? Mine has kind of "a lot" of surface corrosion here and there, so this kind of worry me :)

Yes, water gets on the pinion shaft and sits in the pinion well, and that's the problem. The quality of materials used for the rack in the X7 are obviously sub-standard, that's all we can say as never have there been as many racks with this issue on the same model. If (or more appropriately 'when') it goes, do read up on the other steering rack threads that you have already found, and consider getting a refurbished rack that has been treated and also look at coating the pinion shaft in marine-grade grease and fitting a CV boot over the pinion shaft to help prevent water getting on it in the first place.

You can't unfortunately, but just add everything up collectively and make sure all the issues are ticked.

The poll was really just to get an idea of common faults on the model when I put it up a few years ago now. It was useful for people to see what to expect when potentially looking to buy one.

This is an interesting thread!

Can anyone point me in the direction of a "how to guide" for checking the rack please?

I nearly did that years ago when I put this up - but I stuck to the X7 as we were getting similar component failures (especially, wiper motor ECUs, Steering racks & suspension struts) amongst members which is what prompted me to put this one up, which are uncommon / rare with preceding models.
