Probably find that Gibbo was still using one of these right up until he closed his garage but it looks to be an only mildly dangerous oxy-acetylene kit. None of this bottled acetylene, thank you very much

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
What is it, and how does it work?
On the pencil sharpener front, I recently needed a couple of them. Paid a visit to my local splendid stationery warehouse, and had a choice of five or six . . . every one electric, and running off AA or AAA.
Crazy, I thought, so asked about the crank-handle variety. Staff a little surprised anyone would want one, but two arrived within 48hrs at the princely sum of about €6 apiece. Bench/desktop clamp, shavings drawer, auto-feed, sharpness-adjustable. One happy bunny!

Looks like a water and Calcium Carbide acetylene generator?
I used to be indecisive, now I'm not so sure!

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
I've never seen one of those, plenty of the old acetylene car and bicycle lamps.
I was welding chassis with bottled oxy acetylene right back in the 1950s and lead filling body dents with a hot lead spray torch.

As Mick says, I presume that's a Calcium Carbide Acetylene generator, with the water reservoir at the top. The grey container had a stirrer on it to agitate the Carbide, and the very uppermost part of the apparatus is, I think, the regulator for the water supply. There was a set of welding / brazing rods on the trolley as well.

Re: Remember these.? All our yesterdays
From Sharpening Pencils with some serious weaponry, to electric Milk Floats and Doorstep deliveries of Milk.
Does anyone still get doorstep deliveries of Milk (ie not from ADSA or their rivals along with the rest of the groceries).
Didnt quite have the horse and cart or indeed the electric milk float, and our doorstep deliveries probably finished about 20 odd years ago when the last local operator gave up his round.
Strangely enough yesterday among all the vast number of toy cars played with by our younger generation, the latest choice for acquistion was this three wheeler electric milk float new this week. Totall co-incidental with my "electric milk float" spot here.
Now if MIck happens to see this he may recognise the Dairy.....Braziers of Watford

We stopped it years ago as the milk didn't last very long and cost far more than supermarket milk, which keeps for ages.NewcastleFalcon wrote: ↑27 Jul 2020, 10:47 From Sharpening Pencils with some serious weaponry, to electric Milk Floats and Doorstep deliveries of Milk.

Since the lockdown there is a pickup truck delivers up the street at odd times every day. Anywhere between 08:00 and 00:00. Seems to have other stuff onboard too, looks like eggs, bread cheese, yoghurt etc.

Haven't seen that in many a year. Renamed UHT. Still tastes weird.
