Four years later there was another problem off Devon as described here, https://www.newspapers.com/clip/5055549 ... aking-oil/ , I think I got my detergent ideas from that one!!

Wow, quite an arsenal they threw at it, probably caused as much pollution as the oil!

I had forgotten the ginormous plume of smoke which tended to introduce the news at the time, and of course the smell which lingered for ages!

Bit late to join in, but I remembered a bit more clearly than some of the others.Another random link from a Citrojim quote about the head gasket on an AX
So the question/QuestionsI had to have the job done on my AX around 1996 because oil was pouring out but as I say, if it's not looking like the Torrey Canyon then leave it be...
Look it up afterwards and see how accurate your TOH was.TOH.......What Can you remember about the Torrey Canyon![]()
Mine wont be that accurate!

My family was on holiday in Cornwall, so a bit nearer, and as well as seeing it on the news, a couple of times we saw Buccaneers flying over to bomb it.
One day we visited a place on the west side of the Lizard, Mullion, which had oil all over the beach, some people trying to scrape it up with rakes or something like.
We went to the same place in two Easter holidays, but my guess at the first in '67 was correct.
Another thing from one of those holidays - on April Fool's Day morning my dad called out come on you lot get up, it's snowing. So we stayed in bed a bit longer, not wanting to be April Fools. But it was.

I recall that the efforts of the RAF were rather ignominious. Failed repeatedly to hit it with their bombs.
Surprised they didn't use missiles.

I like a villag-ey scene, I have no idea where it is, but "on your bike" today has a link which may help.
I think its too blurry to get it straight away, although there may be some who just know
