Back to Citroen - Xantia Key idea

Post by xxx »

I've just acquired a 1997 Xantia. The plip doesn't work and its only got one key. I'm not too fussed about not being able to "plip" it to lock and unlock, but is it possible to get another key cut? Should be simple enough, but I was wondering whether the size of the plip bit would make it tricky for a key cutter.
As an aside, I love the car - the 2.0 16v engine can shift a bit when it wants to! Touch wood it will be okay - had a new heater matrix, clutch and cambelt over the last 18 months so fingers crossed that nothing will go wrong for a bit!

it shouldnt be a problem for a key cutter,if it is though just remove the key blade from it by popping the rivet out,a new rivet kit for the key is about £1

I tried to get a key cut for a Xantia a few years ago and was told (by several key cutters) it couldn't be done by the usual method of copying the key to a blank due to the notches in the broad side of the key.
Of course things may have chaged since then.
The alternative is to get a Citroen dealer to have one made up. You should have a card with the key code, if not they may be able to find it from the chassis number.

you'll be ok now,any half decent key cutter can do the lateral cuts in the key.

Last time I got new key made for a Xantia by a main dealer from the key number (about 3 years ago) they charged about £4 or so. I remember it was no more expensive than going to a key cutting booth (who couldn't do Xantia keys anyway).

I went to Timpsons and got a key cut, from the original in less than 5 minutes. It cost around £11 and comes with warranty.

What's the warranty?? That it will work, or that it won't break? Curious...

That it will work. And if you say it doesn't, they give you the money back. And they don't ask for the "faulty" key back. So this is possibly the cheapest way to get a spare key.

Come to think of it, the one I got from Citroen didn't work in the doors but did in the ignition. The old one worked in both.
