Re: French car fatigue and a Japanese crotch rocket.
I'll hopefully be lexia-ing it on Friday, should the kind Mr Hellrazor be available. I was planning to do it today but I've had a really busy day or two and was just knackered. Drove the GP 150 miles in, around and out of London yesterday, and returned 42mpg which I'm well pleased with given the state of the traffic. I bought a 7mm Brake allen key set (by Laser) and they're ideal for tightening the injector clamp bolts. Job done, chuffing ceased.
Now that's done, and it's been serviced it's running much nicer. I cleaned all the goo from everywhere and undid all the intake and vac hoses that I could find, cleaned them up and remade the joins as some looked iffy.
Of course, the damn thing then threw me a puzzle. It has the digital dual-zone climate which was working fine yesterday. Then it went nuts. The fan blower appears to be on near full speed, and the control panel has no effect on this. The temperature controls and air direction controls work fine as does the recirc, auto and AC buttons.
Now, I'd guess at something like the resistor pack or a relay....but... the blower doesn't stop when the ignition is turned off. It seems to go to a slower speed and continue for 2 mins, engine off, doors locked. It then pauses for 15 seconds and comes on for 3 or 4 mins whirring away merrily. It then finally goes silent. until you either open a door - any door, or use the remote to unlock it, upon which the blower starts immediately on a slow speed, rising to near full again when the engine is started. Very odd.
I've done a BSI reset.
Any ideas at all what's causing this weird happening?

Just leave it Mike, or fiddle at random with the controls - it will most likely ignore that until it decides the time is right.
My C5 does it occasionally, among other things*
Sunday gone was the most recent occasion, went back to normal today with no interference from me

* Coming home from the Northern the dash and CD player went nuts, lights flashing randomly, no gauges working, no indicators no sounds (other than mad clicking)**.
This persisted for ten miles up the A1 at 70mph then just reset back to normal.
It does this now and again and we just ignore it or pull in somewhere and let it have forty winks.
** I thought it had happened again last week on the way to work but it was just the CD turned down low, I was hearing the snare drum on a Tinariwen CD

Re: French car fatigue and a Japanese crotch rocket.
Has it been raining down your way recently? If the scuttle drains are blocked (didn't you go there on the last one?) the water overflows into the blower and causes it to be erratic. It's easy enough to remove - driver's foot well, remove the trim over the pedals, 3 bolts and it drops out.

Thanks Richard. I had it on Diagbox earlier today, and I got fewer nasties than I was expecting as it happens. All the BSM and BSI errors were the sidelight bulbs, there was one for the dash panel about a lack of a permanent live (?), and a helpful "air blower fault" logged against the climate. I'll drop it out tomorrow and clean up all the connections, and those on the control panel and see what happens. I suspect the resistor pack might have gone, but it comes on at weird times, like when unlocking or opening a door.
I also forced a regen of the DPF, which got rid of the "particle filter at risk of blocking" message, and I reset the service indicator. I've nipped the injector studs down, no chuffing but still a *slight* exhausty smell from the vents, which may just be my imagination or may not. I'll put new pollen filters in it while I have the heater motor out tomorrow.

Oh yeah, and where is the bag for the eolys fluid on this vehicle? I'd imagine it probably needs refilling..

Bag is in front of OSR wheel. It contains enough for about 80-90k miles, so assuming it was changed, then it should be good for a good while yet.

Re: French car fatigue and a Japanese crotch rocket.
Thanks Richard, I shall get on to that on Tuesday or Wednesday when I can be bothered. It looks like the resistor pack thing has failed on the heater blower, so I'll get a new one, or repair the one that's on it. Not decided yet.
My neighbour, a lovely newly retired lady called Val came up to me while I was fiddling with the GP and said "you know about cars Mike (ha!), do you know anyone a garage who would buy our second car? We're moving as we only need the Touran now"..
03 Plate, 1.4 Polo Match in dark purple. They've owned it from new. Everything works. It's pretty much unmarked all over, and inside. Obviously, a FVWSH doted on throughout it's life. Full climate control, drives absolutely spot on.
Obviously, I now own a £300 (yes!!) Polo 1.4...

Re: French car fatigue and a Japanese crotch rocket.
To veer wildly off-topic, as if a German car wasn't bad enough, I also acquired something else today...
This is Matilda. A friend of a friend is a vet, who'd taken her in as a stray a couple of weeks ago. No joy finding the owner, so after checking her out, she put on FB a request for someone to rehome her.
Obviously, I now own an 8/9 week old kitten, as well as the other two cats. Lovely animal. Nearly all the other kittens I've had over the years hid away for a couple of days when brought home. Not this one, straight out to play, leap on everything, eat, sleep, eat, play and generally be really happy. My missus is even vaguely amused despite it terrorising her by hiding in piles of clothes she's sorting out, then pouncing on her hands. Brilliant

Re: French car fatigue and a Japanese crotch rocket.
There's 2 different types of controller:
Part Number Description Quantity Price excl. VAT Price incl. VAT Total incl. VAT Selection
00006441CE CONTROL MODULE 1 162.98 GBP 195.58 GBP 195.58 GBP (to RP 11437)
00006441W9 CONTROL MODULE 1 159.66 GBP 191.59 GBP 191.59 GBP (From RP 11438)
Change over RP is 03/03/08 - yours could be either depending on when it was built. Both are available in plentiful supply on e-bay for a much more reasonable £30!!

Re: French car fatigue and a Japanese crotch rocket.
Thanks Richard. I think mine is the first type. I remember the RP being 10xxx when Diagbox asked me for it.
3rd time unlucky for me today too. I thought I'd change the pollen filters while I was down there.
What an utter &%$@. How odd that I did the previous 2 with ease!

I'm trading mine on Saturday, I shall not miss that job!! Mind you on the Mk2 you have to remove the end of the dashboard....

The official line is to remove the heater outlet duct (which is right in the way) - I wonder if on the previous ones some one had left this off. Apparently there is a screw near the top somewhere, but I never saw it.
Yes, the resistor looks like the early one - the later one has bobbles on the surface, most odd looking!

I think you've hit the nail on the head there Richard. I did remove the duct on the other two, but they only needed the clip on the side facing the cabin unclipping. Looks like someone had removed the screw prior, so they just popped off. I bought a new resistor pack for £24.99 off eBay, it arrived next day and it's all back together with a properly working blower.
Next job is to un-jam the passenger seat that won't slide forward or backwards. It's in an "ok" position, so it's not essential yet. However, I want to get the interior steam valeted so it needs to be moving before that. I also have a curious message on diagbox about rear auxilliary lighting, so I suppose some unseen interior light bulbs are out. There are at present no other errors, perhaps a first for an ageing GP.
I want to order a turbo core for it, and the replacement parts I'll need when the inevitable happens. Is there a definitive way of working out which turbo it has on it? Does the turbo have the makers name and a number stamped on the housing? I can't see one, but it's a bit grotty and I haven't looked too hard to be honest.
I shall also be treating it to new pads and discs, and a set of tyres in the very near future.

Re: French car fatigue and a Japanese crotch rocket.
Are you sure you aren't driving my car...???
Passenger seat - been there and done that - twice
First time there was a pencil jammed in the runner slot, which stopped it sliding back. Second time I suspect some small child had stood on the adjusting bar, and pushed it down so that it was under the edges of the plastic edge trims, preventing it being pulled up and disengaging the ratchet. It required quite a bit of force to get it back on the right side of the plastic to make it work again. This is much easier than the first time, which required dismantling of the seat in place to allow access to the runners to dig the pencil out. If it's the latter I'll find the post where I described how to do it.
Turbo is probably Garrett, as I think all the 110s are. It is stamped on one of the housings - post a pic and I'll have a look to compare it to mine. If it is OK at present however, get the DPF off and remove the filter in the inlet banjo bolt - this way if you do start to build up crud it will not ruin the turbo. You can tell the oil pickup is getting choked up, as it will rattle for a second or so at start up, and may tap lightly on idle. In this case, whip the sump off and rip the strainer out of the oil pickup - that will prevent any problems. Mine has been running like this for 35k, and is OK with 8k oil changes....

Re: French car fatigue and a Japanese crotch rocket.
Thanks again for all your help Richard, much appreciated.
On another note, do you know how to remove the rear washer jet nozzle? It doesn't appear accessible from behind the trim panel at the top of the tailgate. Mine is broken, and I have a replacement but I can't work out how to get the old one out

Re: French car fatigue and a Japanese crotch rocket.
There isn't anything specific I can see, - here is the routing - so I suspect a clip or two holding it in:
Routing of Tubes | Unclip in the following order : The bezel (5) (at "c") ; Using tool [1] The bezel (4) (at "b") ; Using tool [1] The bezel (6) (at "d") ; Using tool [1] Tool 1 is just a trim removal tool |
Once the Trim is removed, you should be able to see the clips on the jet. |
