So true and Steve, yes, the GS is the benchmark - still one of my very favourite Citroens...

I'd have one over a DS or CX...

Or even an SM...

For an XM or Xantia Paul?

I ask as they are radically different...

It's easy enough Paul. Disconnect the power feed to the bulb(*) and connect it to the switching pin on a relay. Earth the other side of the switching circuit somewhere handy. Run a (fused) wire off the battery to one of the other pins on the relay, and then the final pin to the bulb. Probably worth adding an extra earth from the lamps to reduce volt drop on that side too.

* can't remember as it's 13 years since I had one, they might have H4 bulbs (combined dip and main filaments) in which case you will need to cut the dip (and main if you want to do those as well) wire to insert the relay.

Note that if the car is fitted with dim-dip you will need to find and remove the relay - otherwise you will find the headlights doing all sorts of strange things!! There's some weird setup where by the dim dip is earthed via the main bulbs....!

Paul, have you got the Haynes manual for BX? If not, it does contain a wiring diagram, which I can post.

For some reason I think the relay is on the bulkhead. An alternative is to unplug the dim dip resistor which is next to the radiator. IIRC what happens is that the dim dip current is not enough to trigger the relay, but is enough to hold it open, so initially you get normal dim dip, then when you switch to dip the relay energises, and stays energised even if you switch back to dim dip, leaving the lights on! There might also be an effect that leaves the dip bulbs on if you flash the (main beam) headlights. All very confusing till you figure out what is going on!

Paul - BX Diesel circuit - from Haynes, up to 1990/91.
I don't have a diagram showing DimDip for the BX.
