ahhrggg

it happened again.. I was in the drivers seat last Sunday.. I was trying to get my PP to see the car, (it does sometimes but it's a faff) and the IGN had been on for 5 mins.. I went to start the car, no compression, eventually it got going but sounded like a bad pig, and stank of fuel.. I told SWIMBO to leave it alone, and make other plans..
long story short, I went back an hour later, no probs at all..

but.. I googled in the meantime, and found a post by en ex-psa tech, who said that these 2.0's have bad hydraulic tappets, and that swapping with the 1.8 tappets is the way forwards.. I think the point is the valves can remain open due to oil viscosity, and that one may get luck by changing to a thinner oil..

if this is true, it may explain a lot.. the lack of comp, and after some running, a bit of warmth, all back to normal again??

found the posting
'i work as a master tech in a Peugeot dealer and this fault is very common on 2 litre RFN engine vehicles , its caused by the hydraulic tappets over pumping when the oil is cold and thicker , some sucess may be found by changing to a 5w30 oil for a while , the fault is usually worse in winter from a cold start but will be there all year round !!, bringing the revs up off idle usually stops it and as you have noticed only a few minutes of running the car will be ok , The permanent cure is to replace the hydraulic tappets with ones from the 1.8 litre engine (ew7) the peugeot part numbers for 2 litre engine has been superceded to the 1.8 ones, do not use pattern parts as some of our customers have found to their cost they do not cure the fault . hope this helps'

Is this also the 2.0 engine that is somewhat known to drop valves on occasion? (I guess so, since it was a friend's partner's 206CC I first saw/heard of the issue in).

If this is the case, and the tappets are indeed pumping when cold as that chap describes, perhaps the cause of that is the tappets holding the valves far enough open to make light contact with the pistons? Not enough to bend them so much as to lose compression immediately/permanently, but enough to flex/fatigue them over time until they drop their head?
