Are midnight motors (wembley) still trading? Been a long time since I've been up that way but I would think they can probably recommend any good PSA indy's in your area.

Fellow members - I know this thread is a little old. The lockdown came in - before I could get these issues addressed.

I hoped it might just be glow plugs - as the car takes 15 mins to prime then 15 mins to warm the engine. After that it does run - but it still sounds chesty/congested.

I am a 2.5 year member of this wonderful community. I’ve contributed - not just taken.

I am reluctantly reaching out to fellow members - and am directly asking for help.

I am currently based in Surrey - but will be willing to travel far. This car is the only one we have. I need it to get work.

Will any fellow member of the community be able to recommend someone with specialist expertise on these engines - or consider taking a look themselves at a fair rate.

Someone who is experienced and knows it’s unique quirks & characteristics.

I’ve had to live with this issue for a while now, and need to know if I have transport for the months ahead - or if the car is end of life.

With warmth & thanks,

Andle

I have used PTS Developments (near Wokingham) in the past, and found them to be pretty good.

Hell Razor5543,

Thank you for that suggestion. I will get into them tomorrow morning. Because of the lockdown, many garages are booked full.

So I need a few suggestions more.

Can anyone recommend a garage that are highly skilled in assessing hdi engines?

How did you establish the fuel pump as the primary culprit.

What were the indications that singled it out from anything else?

Because diesel is an oil and provides a lubricating effect on the fuel components including the pump. Petrol acts as a solvent and once circulated in the pump (my xantia had in in-tank fuel pump) it has the opposite effect that causes friction between the various parts, but is known to cause damage to the tank pumps. It can also casue damage further up the line if allowed to circulate for too long. It can cause all sorts of damage.

It's not so bad the other way round though.

In my case despite cleaning the fuel tank out, the damage was done - fuel starvation due to the pump failing because of the damage the petrol did to it. So the pump was replaced and I was lucky that this seemed the end of my problems.

I should say the Citroen technician who did all the work on my cars was amazed that I hadn't literally 'flown' to the garage via an explosion - given that HDi engines ignite the diesel via high compression and considering petrol is far more flammable......

How was the mechanic able to establish the fuel pump was damaged?

Was it totally dead or was it simply malfunctioning.

The reason I ask - is that my fuel pump has been working for the last two years - so if it is merely damaged - how would I check?

Ultimately the pump failed to work and I suspect the seals were damaged from the petrol apart from anything else It was many years ago now. These are quite distinct when they operate - they make a humming noise and can be easily heard. It was many years ago now, so I can't remember everything - but realistically this was going to be the first thing to go as it is sitting submerged in direct contact with the petrol.

I'd like to thank you for this suggestion. I went in a couple days ago to meet Mark. As I'd been so burned by Ray williams in Slough.

Great guy - thoroughly knowledgeable & worked as in a dealership - as an official Citroen technician in the past. He knew the engine - although he was puzzled about one thing - he couldn't figure out why priming the car for 15 mins gave her a smoother / smokeless start. But I feel good about his skills at figuring it out.

I did test him quite a bit - and he gave a very good first impression. Car booked in for a couple weeks from now.

Thank you for the heads up HR. Much appreciated.
