I've only just discovered them, but the 1st was just too small.

Thanks, I'll look out for another, relevant one, to steal.

Mine is all my own work - except for the picture I cropped it out of - that was taken by a professional...

I've never bothered with an avatar on here yet, although just had an idea of one I could "knock up" out of a couple of pics of our Xants' :D

Oh, oh - seems like we may have a good thing going! :-D

b-t-w, I do have a picture of an Indonesian C15 (they have nudge bars) which I was going to use but I couldn't edit/re-size it because it's protected. #-o

Hmmm, for the size/resolution it'd need surely you could screenshot it & crop that? ;)

while I do like a good avatar ... I like getting the correct drive shaft seal better!!

The one in the middle is what came off the car, the one to the left and right are the ones from gsf.

Does anyone know what is the correct part so I finally put this car back together?

If you use gravatar.com to upload your avatar, it will do the resizing etc, and you can keep a gallery of them, and select the one that suits your mood.

I'd suggest the one on the right of the pic is the correct one, but either there's something missing from it or there's a housing that's come out attached to the old one... :? Sorry I can't add much more than that, except to say that I did read somewhere that there was 2 types of seal, one with the "cage" thing and one without & in that instance the caged one was correct.

My guess would be that neither are correct. I had the same issue with my C5 which seems to use the same (or very similar) seals. I ordered one from GSF, and they sent the wrong one (most like the one on the left of your picture). I have lost all trust in GSF for supplying small components (bolts/nuts/seals/bearings etc) as they just seem to put their hand in a parts bin and send a part at random.

The correct replacement should have the metal collar of the original. This is needed to correctly seat the seal. I found that the only place to get the seal when I needed it was the Citroen dealer, and I recall that it was not massively expensive (from memory around £15).

Sam's probably right actually, now I look closer the new seal's "cage" is not identical to the old. New one has 12 "teeth" whereas old has 15... If it's a dealer only part then at least it's not as exorbitant in price as, say, and EGS release bearing!

Post up the VIN, and I'll check the correct part number. I think the new seal to the right is correct; I don't think that metal bit is supposed to have come out....

The Ball joint can be a pig - Mandrake and I have just fought with one on his car - get the proper socket; mount the hub in a good vice; make sure the staking is relieved; secure the socket with a nut on the end of the ball joint thread; get plenty of heat on the joint; get a very long bar; swing hard and pray!

If the CV is suspect, which is sounds like it is, then you might as well fit a new one whilst the shaft is out - it will be much easier on the bench. They can be had very cheaply from J and R CV joints - I've had one on my 307 for over 20k and it has been fine.

If the seal is the same as the C5, which it looks to be, it will be part number 3121 24, replaced by 3121 65.

http://service.citroen.com/docapv/affic ... ct=FCT0015

As shown in the drawing, the metal collar is integral with the seal.
