I have two cars insured with LV. My C5-X7 which I mainly use to pull my caravan and a '98 Saxo. I like LV because they give me full European cover on the C5 for four months of the year at a reasonable additional cost. I was waiting in dread for the renewal notices to arrive in April and sure enough when they did, they wanted to increase the total by £350. I went on to Go Compare and put in my details. Dozens of quotes came up with LV being amongst them - but quoting a bit more than my last year's price. I then re-entered my details but added one daughter as an additional driver to each car. Fresh quotes came up, all lower than the previous list. So to get a lower quote gents, add an (experienced) additional driver to your policy. On Go Compare, LV quoted me more or less the price that I'd paid last year. I rang them and told them what I'd done and asked whether I should cancel my present policy and re-join through Go Compare website. They agreed straight away to renew my policy over the phone at the website price. I guess had I renewed on Go Compare, LV would have had to pay them a commission.

I insure all my cars with LV... They always come back with excellent prices and their customer service is very good, something I rate highly...

I also get an additional discount for being a member of the CSMA (now Boundless) and get discounts for also having my home insurance with them too...

A win all-round :)

I now go through the rigmarole of comparing prices every year to keep costs down on our two insurances. It's a bind but it's worth it in the end. I use the MSE checklist order:

Confused.com
Compare the Market
Go Compare
Money Supermarket

and then the ones that aren't on the comparison sites:

Direct Line
Aviva
Zurich

and then just for a laugh (because they're usually waaaay over with their pricing) Saga.

Foreign cover is important for and I had to exclude a lot of the top picks as they either didn't cover me for enough time abroad in total or limit me to a maximum of 30 days for any one visit.

This year I eventually went for an on-line only company Quote Me Happy (terrible name). I later discovered that it's a front for Aviva so they can get into the comparison sites whilst maintaining their "we're not on comparison sites" stance.

The quote for QMH was from the Compare the Market comparison site so I claimed my free Meerkat as well. I completely disregard any of the prizes offered in choosing the insurance but if something's there to be claimed then, hey-ho, I'll bag it!
As I get older I think a lot about the hereafter - I go into a room and then wonder what I'm here after.

I am awaiting with interest my renewal notification from Direct line, I insured the wife's 406 estate with them last year as the comparison sites have gone potty and they were the cheapest I could find at £176 this year and £160 something last year, the cheapest on Confused was around £190 which is quite a bit cheaper than they quoted last year.

I am a named driver on my wifes car which is virtually identical to mine, even the same colour hence my interest in my premium, I wonder what their excuse will be for charging me more - if they in fact do.

A call to Direct Line this morning managed to get the renewal cut down to £248.64, best quote from elsewhere £299.84. LV want £307 'take it or leave it' attitude from them.

Forgot to mention, quite bizarrely, the C15 IS insured under "specialist vehicle" policy - sort of classic for vehicles not old enough. The whole comparison thing doesn't work for it because it's a van, so not listed & van insurance won't cover it because it's not used commercially &, when I 1st got it, at least 2 companies, after about a month, arbitrarily, cancelled the policy, one did have the decency to give me a month's notice (but refused an explanation), one threatened a penalty (i.e. in addition to the forfeited premium) if I didn't return the documentation they'd never sent!

The Cherokee's with LV, have to say I have been v. impressed (except for that extra £30 'cos the red one's not a limited edition (as opposed, confusingly, to a "Limited"). I originally insured the '98 STS with them because on a comparison website they, amazingly, were by far the cheapest (closely followed by M&S Bank, then some independent I'd never heard of - then add £100+ & all the usual suspects in the Classic/specialist/American field, going up to 2 -3 times LV's quote). I was pretty certain this was a loss leader snare to get me on board, then exploit inertia when it came to auto-renew BUT, no, next year, it was a little less (the extra NCB slightly exceeding the almost inevitable annual increase). I then asked them about the Cherokee, which had been quite an expensive insurance proposition) &, again, they came up trumps - although I was a little disappointed they wouldn't allow me an extra year's NCB - a quirk of different purchase dates. They are good people to deal with, nothing like the huge undertaking they are, although I have since moved the Caddy to a specialist broker, who came recommended, mainly because of their reputation for dealing with European recovery. Next year MAY be a little different because I want recovery for the Cherokee - because that provided "free" as a perk of my fee paying bank a/c is a disaster!

They do load you for age. Your cheapest premiums are in your late 50's. I noticed when I turned 60 it took a jump and despite shopping around it could not be decreased . Obviously Post Code and mileage etc are factors. £197 for The Donk with max years NCD.

I'm 78 and paid about £160 last year, my wife is 73 and I have just renewed hers with Direct line £176. Mine comes up next month so I will be interested to see what that is.

Fully comp, third party or what? Protected NCD? How many miles a year declared for each?
