Bloody 'ell that sounds like something that'd happen to me! How's the valve, is it still held in the guide by the piston & did it feel bent?

What a royal pain, surely unacceptable for a named brand tensioner to fail at 7k. might be worth a call to the manufacturer to see if there's any chance of a goodwill gesture to help with the repairs. (even if it's no more than the offer of a replacement belt kit it'd be better than nothing, and if their customer service did go above and beyond then so much the better)

I'm wondering if it could have been a counterfeit bearing?

Was the engraving on it clean and clear?

Shame that. What with the time doing the change in the first place, to give peace of mind, then sorting all this out.
I read a long article, basically saying the manufacturer will pull the stops out on quality, for the bits for the new car. Aftermarket though, it only has to gaurantee say, one or two years. Car might be sold or scrapped during that. The car value is nowhere near the same as a new car either, so the stakes of claim are different.
The price of the aftermarket kits are quite cheap. Built down to a price?

Sorry chaps I must have been having a 'senior moment' when I wrote that last night, it wasn't the tensioner that failed it was the idler wheel next on after the tensioner, the tensioner itself is ok.

As for the valve it's still sitting in place and doesn't feel bent so providing I can find the spring and collet I can fix it.

The trouble is I'm working on a paved area that's surrounded on all sides by loose gravel...............now I wonder where that tiny collet is.

Get some sheets of 25mm thick marine ply, I have some cut into 4ftx6ft sections, it will take a trolley jack and is heavy enough to "level" the gravel under it with a small shuffle.

I'm ok for the actual working area, it's paved with 2x2 concrete slabs, just the area around it is gravel and if my missing collet is in there it will need a metal detector to find it.

Shame NewcastleFalcon has already sent his Pic to the scrappy or there'd be a potential spring/collet donor there... Still worth an ask/look if you have a scrappy local to you, I'm sure they wouldn't mind you taking bits off an already dead engine.

I've been dragging around a couple of speaker magnets without any luck for the collet but found the spring easy enough sitting on the sub-frame. Of course there are a million hidey holes on the car where the part could be sitting grinning. :)

Off now to Specsavers to collect my new glasses, will call in the factors and get a belt kit.

I have a mate on my route who will probably have a 'glory box' full of collets.

Sounds like a good mate to have, so it'll be back on the road this afternoon then? ;)

Not today I got diverted onto some other needy project, I've got all the parts ready, found the collet, just need to raise the necessary enthusiasm to get started again.

Glory box, an old motor trade name for that box of saved bits that 'might be useful one day'

All sorted now, toughest bit was getting the valve spring back on.

Glad to hear all's well now, how did you go on with the valve spring? I'd have opted for compressed air down the GP hole to hold the valve in place, petrol engine I would likely have put a bit of nylon rope down the plug hole and wound the piston round to trap it. Interested to hear any other method you may have used, and can imagine it was 'fun' getting the spring compressed enough. Now a nice low revving sidevalve or IOE lump would have been a doddle, just hold the spring/cap down with one hand and insert collets with the other :D bet these springs are a bit tougher though!
