Thanks for all the advice, with a lack of knowledge, I think it will take me a long time to do if I were to tackle it. I think more phone calls would be a good idea to see if anyone wants to do it. Re. compression test, thanks, that was my thought too and will do, but all the signs are pointing to a HGF...

I would have thought you could have found someone to tackle it, for a self employed back street mechanic I don't think it would present any problems, if I was a few years younger I would have offered to do it myself, I still maintain my own cars but that's about the limit of my energy. If the car is drivable and you don't mind travelling there is a chap 'up north' who would probably do it, Malcolm at Savoy Garage, I can give you his phone number if you would like it. Is there not anyone on the forum that can do it for you? Or perhaps on the Citroen XM forum? I will enquire on your behalf.

There's a few Cit specialists round there BL Autos at Welwyn, PTS developments at Wokingham. Further afield, Mark Lightfoot at Ilkeston, or Chevronics perhaps? Might take it on, but I can see a garage being reluctant as if anything breaks, spares could be tricky and it could end up occupying the workshop for a while, racking up costs.

Thanks both, have tried PTS and Chevronic and don't really want to touch it. I will try the others. I have not yet exhausted my list but will keep trying, have done about 9...The concern is the porous block.

Hi All, just want to say thanks to everyone's suggestion. I have not had a chance to look until this weekend. So I have replace coolant with deionised water, replace the fan switch (fans now kick in at 87). I have put a bottle of Kseal ultimate and let it run as instructed. So far, it has worked well...it's better than I expected, there is no loss of coolant and the mayo is slowly disappearing, obviously could be a short term fix, but it will do for now until I have time to properly sort it out (have also got a Haynes manual...).

That surprises me about PTS, as last time I was up there they had an SM in, and the time before that, a GS Birotor. I'd have thought a CX would be pretty easy for them!

I can't remember which specialist said what, but generally they are very busy and would like to only change the HG on cars they know...

Here are some photoes, from the post where I bought the car: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=57204
