We're back home finally, failed on a couple of little niggly bits. inner CV boot clip broke (it was a nasty plastic one, replacing with proper item) & right headlamp aim too high (adjuster didn't work for the tester, sorted now).

Booked in to get it's ticket Thursday at 5 now though, garage was super busy and short staffed or I'd have fixed it on the spot! Well impressed with the sheet in all honesty considering how long it's sat for & that the engine and rear beam were both seized tight 6 days ago. She really really wants to live, and so she shall! Smile

Advisories on brake discs having rust (that'll clear with driving anyway), reg plates cracked (being replaced anyway), small oil leak (just my spillage from adjusting the valves) and surface rust on the suspension components. Emissions passed fine & brakes passed fine which impressed the heck out of me, it's definitely not how long they stand for but where they stand, had cars in worse shape that've sat less than 2 years.

There's also the front struts to replace with coilovers (one of the springs is softer than the other, luckily tester was OK with that) and right front wheel bearing had slight noise but no play so those are on the "as soon as it's tested" list, along with replacing the heater hoses and sorting the rad cap. Other than that it's just a case of full service, cambelt & a good wash plus some decent tyres and the world will have one more real car back in service. :)

I'd call that a great result considering the time you've had her Dan. Roll on Thursday!! :yeah:

Can't wait, just a shame the garage was so busy or it'd be on the road tomorrow. Bleeding fantastic result considering how long it's been sat for, honestly still in shock that the emissions passed with 1/8th tank of old petrol still in there albeit mixed with 20 quids of super and a bottle of Comma injector cleaner. That and how solid the shell is for a car that was covered in moss on the top side...

That is one fantastic result :D Absolutely excellent! Those two fails were so minor as to be of no consequence whatsoever...

I'd say an exceedingly good buy!

Very super duper impressed, the lad's done well on this one :) MoT now passed, next on the list is backdated maintenance & new heater hose plus a proper wash as she's not only got the remainder of the moss/lichen but now wears an array of filthy hand prints too!

Some cars just want to live despite the odds & this is surely one of them.

Absolutely and congrats on the MoT pass!

I think we need some more pictures, especially of the array of filthy hand prints ;) :D

Well, only 3 and a bit years since I last updated this! Much has changed in the meantime but the one constant has been good ol' Black (Still ain't got a name lol). She's been with us through thick & thin, a hugely busy 2021 with eldest lad's mental health & home schooling the youngest since C-19 became a "thing" saw no time to really get online much but Black served well, alongside the rapidly multiplying other cars. Finally when things seemed to be calming down a little, Our youngest son Ryan mysteriously collapsed one evening after Christmas. Despite numerous trips to A&E they were adamant nothing was amiss, despite our worries that he'd also begun losing weight rapidly & being unusually tired all the time.

Finally, after ECG's, X-rays & blood tests either "normal" or no follow up from the hospital we were concerned enough to make the trip up to Manchester children's hospital A&E as opposed to our local one, within 24 hours he was diagnosed with CCTGA (rare congenital heart defect wherein the ventricles are effectively twisted round & plumbed backwards) and resultant tricuspid valve leak and late-stage heart failure. People born with CCTGA are normally diagnosed at birth, and don't generally make it to their teens without intervention, Ryan had just turned 12 at time of diagnosis in Febuary '22!

He was immediately taken to Alder Hey for surgery & while Emma stayed with him I was blasting from Congleton to Liverpool & back a couple of times a day to take clothing/food etc. After a few days we were granted a place in Ronald McDonald house (The charity you see boxes for on the drive thru window, allowing parents to stay close to the hospital while their children are inpatients) so I ended up sleeping there & just doing the L'pool-Congleton-L'pool run once a day to look after the animals.

Money was tight & fuel prices stupid during this time, so I was at Tesco filling up on £1/litre sunflower oil every few days in order to be able to also eat. On one of these pit-stops somebody found amusement in me tipping gallons of veg into the tank & filmed it. Said video went viral on facebook, which would be OK except for the circumstances & some of the hassle it caused. Eventually the MoT expired & having no time or money to get it booked in we were reduced to borrowing a car for the rest of the duration of Ryan's stay in hospital.

Ryan's operation was a success, and despite many hiccups and scares along the way he was well enough to return home at the end of May '22 but obviously car stuff was way down in priorities for the moment & Black sat, and sat. Come October '22 another blow, our landlord decided he was selling up & wanted us out stat. (nothing like kicking a family when they're down, eh!) so we had a little while to arrange a new place and how to shift all our stuff.

We managed this, found a house in Knutsford and moved in around mid-November. Eldest lad was having increasing mental health issues at this point aggravated by the move, so cars again took a back seat whilst we tried to settle into our new home. Things were OK for a while, but eventually we realised that the neighbours either side of us were not as nice as they tried to appear & cracks started showing. That place never really felt like home, long story less said about that the better but by November '23 we had found a new place in Manchester & agreed a moving date, much better suited to us & the neighbours are human to boot :)

By this time, Daniel's mental health had deteriorated & he's now in the care of his grandparents (again less said about that, & them, the better). Time finally allowed to resurrect Black before the move, she'd been sat patiently now for over 18 months with a leaking pump (one of the non-viton O rings) and clattery drop links amongst other things & last run on 100% veg. Walked up, said hello again to my old faithful friend, threw a battery in & she fired right up in 5c drizzly weather & sat there loping along while the oil warmed up. Suspension came up only to reveal all 4 spheres had ruptured despite being stored depressurised :(

Oh well, I had a set of new HA ones in the stash so that was a "free" fix (even though it's non-HA car). Pump resealed, tank topped off with dinosaurs and other suspension/steering bits attended to just in time for the booked MoT. Turn the key & she cranks forever, OK it's still got a bit of air to get through & the diesel needs to mix in thinks me.

By the time we get to the MoT station she's still surging & spluttering like a cold engine on veg, blowing little puffs of grey/white smoke as she ticks over. Tester was OK to continue the test despite it stinking the workshop out (I did ask if he wanted to abandon but guy's a legend) so I thought may as well see if there's anything else too. Ah, NS inner sill needed a patch too :( I'd noticed the square plug had gone AWOL and resealed that but I didn't think it'd been that way for any time, evidently salt spray had got into the sill though so back home that was attended to first off. Fiddly little patch & blast oil inside the sill/reseal again and job's good. Door jamb is also still holding up OK.

Onto the running issue, only thing I thought it could be was I'd got the timing a tooth retarded. Attempting to pin-up again that was indeed the case so that was sorted. Passed 5 days later & small list of bits (other than a couple of tyres) of to-do this year. Onto the house move, 6th January & although we had a hire van for most of our stuff Black was pressed into service moving smaller/more fragile or valuable items as well as pulling a twin axle trailer carrying Ryan's Blaze Yellow 306 project to the new house, and taking 3 of Daniel's various other cars to a storage yard. 1.9D auto FTW, never gonna set the world on fire but she gets the job done as long as there's no big hills (fortunately these runs were fairly flat).

Since then she's been providing sterling daily service & has gained 4000 miles since the new year, and has a c.250 mile round trip to complete tomorrow (the return journey carrying a ZX sans-engine/box/brake system). The year's not been without issue mind, the cooling system is in need of some serious love now. The thermostat jammed open so I swapped in a new one but the housing is now distorted and leaking slightly, and the radiator is also on it's last legs with a few missing fins and a weep low down on the NS (Good job I know how to check my fluids!) plus it seems I damaged a rear ram boot when changing the spheres and that's now got a small drip after sitting overnight.

So, before I get too stuck into the ZX project I think Black is due some serious love & appreciation for the loyal service she provides. Well that was somewhat of a flipping novel, maybe I should release it as a film next year haha! Hope everyone else is enjoying their Frenchies just as much & really pleased to see lots of familiar faces (read- profiles) still active. All for now I think :D Dan

Oh wow! What a story! Glad you and Emma are keeping your heads above water.

How is Ryan now? Sadly such stories of missed diagnosis and poor treatment are becoming common in the Australian health system as well.

I have read some of your posts in the past - had no idea it was so long since you'd posted! Well done correctly diagnosing the timing issue - I'd still have been fiddling with filters and looking for leaks.

Cheers

Oh Dan! I saw your post yesterday, read it - just about, as still struggling cognitively due to ongoing illness - and wanted to reply but could not summon the necessary skills.

My goodness, you have all been through the mill well and truly and I feel for you all. Delighted Ryan's now good and here's hoping the situation with Daniel will resolve in due course...

And well done, in the midst, sorting out the car issues too! You are an absolute star!

Keep up the good work and keep us all updated :D

Thanks Alec, had no idea time had flown so quickly myself haha. The timing was the only thing it could've really been considering it was fine before I resealed the pump, was more annoyed at myself for getting it off in the first place to be honest!

and thanks, Jim, too. I know it's not always easy for you to get back quickly, it's all good as long as you don't overdo the effort fella. Am just as glad to see you here still and enjoying life :) I wouldn't go as far as "star" though, we're all just living life & trying to muddle through best we can right?

Anyway back to Citroens... Lookie here, what's followed us home today then? 8-)

Not long got home after a long journey to somewhere past Newark, a 220+ mile round trip which took in the Woodhead pass both ways amongst other less-than-flat roads so you can imagine the speeds on the return leg loaded up with the new toy! Black acquitted herself & her 68bhp (maybe 45-50 to the wheels?) brilliantly though, as I've always said she ain't quick but she'll do all you need.

The ZX is a '96 model, 1.9TD SX with 82k on the clock. Overall seems to be in reasonable shape, very solid apart from one patch on the OS strut top & one in the arch. Interior is quite nice, original radio, ashtrays unused, quite possible back seats unused too! Was originally a "little old lady" car until 2019-ish & then it ended up through a couple of owners & then someone put a hammer through the windscreen. Last guy bought it to break to fix his 306 & we spotted it on facebook just before it went to scrap.

So far it needs engine/gearbox/clutch/all ancillaries, master cylinder, calipers/hoses/discs/pads, rear brakes, windscreen & looks like the rear beam could use a rebuild too as one wheel is cambered in a little. All in good time though, she's too cool to allow to die :D How often do you see a 3 door ZX any more?

That ZX is going to be a great project Dan and I'm going to enjoy reading all about it :D

With my Citroen Car Club Citroenian columnist hat on, it would make a very good series of articles.. If you'd like to se the project appear on the pages of a glossy magazine the let me know ;)

Haha, if you think it'd make good content then feel free :) Just spent most of today giving her a little bit of a clean up, found the battery leads & after making sure nothing could short we powered up the shell & checked some of the electrics. Most lights work (including dash backlighting!), driver's window good, singular electric mirror good, wiper & washer good and the radio would work if I had the code for it. (Anyone know where I can find a code for a Blaupunkt 3021 head unit without having to pay a dodgy website?). Did think we got lucky with a code pencilled on the visor but no, seems that's going to be the immobiliser code.

With the car powered up it seemed prudent to attend to the non-functional NS outer door handle (simply popped out of the linkage) and de-tangling the window regulator cables/making a bodge repair to one of the cable ends so it functions again for the moment, window is up & the nasty duct tape can go away from that side.

Then tried my luck with the electric sunroof (also taped up, half open!). Typical issues with the mechanism having a chewed gear and jamming, but with the motor removed I can work it through it's full range so the cables are OK at least. Black tape removed from there also.

Now it's cleaner it's evident there are a couple of annoying creases in the bodywork , one on the driver's front wing but the other is on the passenger door & into the rear quarter also. Bit of a shame but the paint is largely unbroken so it doesn't show too badly & a little PDR may work wonders in future. Also various little rusty stonechip-like spots all over the bonnet & wing tops, which I believe are from grinding sparks landing on the paint. Very hopeful that this will mostly come out with a T-cut and wax, and the paint is pretty oxidised in general so the whole thing needs a going over but ought to come up very presentable indeed.

Will grab some actual photos (I know, me getting photos! What's the world coming to?) in a sec, show what we're working with :)

Cheers, Dan
