4HP14 is filled using a funnel into the dipstick holder.

The level is checked the way Jim describes - on the dipstick with a hot gearbox at idle in neutral after you have just put it through each position on the gear lever.

No ECU means no Lexia required. :-D

Dead easy as autos go...the only thing is you won't be able to get it up to temperature without at least a 20-30 minute on road drive, as I pointed out earlier. So if it's checked cold the level will be out, and autos are very fussy about the oil level being correct.

Alasdair, did you clean the gauze filter when you did the ATF change? Not sure where it is on a 14. Simon, you'll know won't you!

Also, there may be a swarf magnet in the filter assembly too... It may look like a metallic hedgehog ;)

I don't remember changing any filters Jim, just the oil - I don't know where any filters might located be or whether they are accessible without stripping down the box.

It's possible there was a swarf magnet on the drain plug but I also can't remember for sure - it was 11 years ago! :-D

The dipstick is right up front near the radiator on the battery side and sticks right up to the top of the engine similar to an engine oil dipstick - it's the large orange one with the radiator hose curving around it:

Ahh now I've just looked in the service information Simon and I see the filter is internal, under the tin sump cover, as is the swarf magnet... So, it's a case of popping off the sump to get at both items... So you were right and I was well wrong :)

I was thinking it might have used the same arrangement as the 4HP18 where the filter and magnet are under a small plate in the base of the gearbox and easy to get at...

Mind you, the HP14 filter and magnet is not that hard to get to and might be worth a check...

Alasdair, I'll scan you the service information I have on the 4HP14 as it also goes through all the adjustments and setting-up which might be valuable for you to go through... It'll also show exactly where the filter and magnet is too...

Stuff to do on the next change...

In that case, an ideal time to slip off the sump and check the filter and magent ;)

Alasdair you've exploded the gearbox!!!

There's a good stockist of spares just up the road from you in Radstock ;)

Filter is item 010 and item 765 is the sump.

The gauze filter should be reusable after a wash. There is info here on governor seal replacement on the 4hp18 http://www.aussiefrogs.com/forum/citro% ... seals.html , the 14 should be similar.

Hope you get this sorted Alasdair. Would be a great shame to loose another one of these cars. Just got to keep plodding on with these projects. They keep on fighting us but we must persevere to the bitter end. Not sure i would ever have an automatic myself. The manual boxes are complicated enough for me.

I do not plan to keep it, just fix it and sell on at a no profit margin.

Only if the box is an easy fix, no engine/box out or anything.

If the box cannot be fixed I will cut up the car for the good/perfect sills/door shut area, trim and electrics etc, remove anything I can use on my V6 and scrap it......I am a brute with 2nd hand car values....

If I can fix it I will paint the bonnet, switch the wing for a good one and put black "vinyl wrap" on the roof then lend it to a little Red Head in the village I know or sell it......
