Interesting to read its compulsory for emission equipment to be warranted for 8 years / 80K miles 'across the pond' diesels too. A good point is raised there that the quality of our DFP parts would no doubt improve overnight if the manufacturer knew they had to pay to replace them.

Having said this is usually the dealership (with monies returned from the manufacturer) as the 1st year is 'factory' and the 2+3rd are 'dealer' warranty, at least it used to be like that for PSA... Much fun.
Andy.

Great reading about the old Routemasters & genny sets earlier in this thread, I too have developed a strange perversion for large old diesels and the sight/sound spectacle (not to mention the torque of roadgoing motors). In fact I tried to do a "cold start" video a few days back, cranking the 406 over without letting the GP's heat up, I'm almost embarrassed to admit that it started within 5 seconds and clattered/smoked less than our 1.6 petrol Escort cabriolet which I fired up at the same time!

Interesting to read about the origins of the XUD engine also, I was aware that the head made use of the Comet pre-chamber but the fact that the whole engine is British... I was clueless to that, will have to do a little more research on that.

Apropos of the Comet chamber ISTR that Fiat diesel engines of the same vintage wouldn't pay for the right to use the Ricardo patent and instead used a barrel shaped chamber. As a result the smoke output was significantly worse and they were an absolute bugger to get through the smoke test.

There is a lot in the Ricardo history about his patents and royalty payments... The biggest problem was with patents Ricardo held for the 'turbulent head', a revolutionary combustion chamber design for side-valve engines...

Amongst those that used the design but refused to pay were Henry Ford and Herbert Austin.. Ford, the ignoramus he was, expected Ricardo to pay for the honour of Ford using the design in his engines...

Ricardo won the court cases and the transgressors all had to pay up... Ford really was an awful man in all kinds of nasty ways...

Ricardo's relationship with Andre Citroen was rather cordial and they got on very well indeed. Ricardo ran a Diesel Citroen Rosalie as his car for many years...

Ekjdm, delighted you enjoy reading all our yarns on here :D I've had lots of fun hand-starting sizeable diesels in my time. Engage decompresser, crank the engine as fast as you can whilst watching the decompresser mechanism 'count down' and be prepared for when the decompresser disengages and keep turning the handle as the compression suddenly hits.. You hope you've spun it up fast enough to carry over the compressions and for the engine to start... Otherwise it's start again.

You needed to be seriously fit to be successful!

The golden rule was to keep hold of the starting handle after the engine had started else it might fly away and cause untold mayhem

Great fun...

But give me citroen over a VW any day! I positively hate the things - always have since we had a VW camper when I was a wee lad and it was always breaking down and noisy as hell - and possibly the fact that I always had to sleep in the roof tent may have had something to do with my loathing of them! Freezing nights in the Austrian alps in one of those things....
I'm quite happy to share my experience with a MK4 Golf TD I owned for two months (it had two owners in the previous 3 months, a sure serious warning sign) my saving grace was I did track down and fix one of the major issues that a specialist garage (possibly 2) was unable too...

I remember the Trickets fair ground gen sets being started by hand. A tube 8-[ around the starting handle with a knotted rope attached one man turned the handle the other pulled the rope at the bottom of the stroke . I used to work building up and pulling down the dogem set. And go up on the roof frame and pull the tilt (roof) into place. Used to work for food mainly but it was great fun whilst it lasted very hard work to. Back in 80s when unemployment was rife along the south coast. To much heavy lifting gets you in the end.I'd say the heaviest parts were the metal floor plates and the tilt pillars. The cars were light weight in comparison. The diesel gennys were five cylinder inline engines. And were as long as the width of the lorry that carried them they stood about four feet high behind the lorry cab. With a belt driven three phase generator.

Great fun...

Delighted to be reading them too :) I have had a small amount of experience hand-cranking a twin cylinder, air cooled Lister (IIRC) diesel in an old dump truck, I'm not sure what capacity but probably under 2 litres, this one didn't have the luxury of a clockwork countdown timer but relied on the decomp. lever being flicked down at the right moment. I found it a lot easier with a bit of baler twine tied round it so I could knock the valve-lifter off and get my hand back on the handle in time to maul it over TDC. [-o< Yes it was very disheartening to hear it chuff, wheeze and then try to kick the handle backwards out of your hand, specially on a cold day when the oil was thicker. A first-try start though brought a warm glow caused by both satisfaction AND the exertion! :rofl2:

Much nicer though than the recoil starter on a small diesel generator set. IMO recoil starters are fit only for small, ideally sidevalve, petrol engines. [-X

In once bought a single cylinder lister generator on flea bay for £150 I sold it on for £550 to a collector who exports them to the us apparently they are great demand over there. I bought a Kipor 4.5kw elect start Genny which now lives in my shed it needs some repairs doing I have the parts just don't seem to get around to it.

I'm glad they got that bit out about misusing the stats...
Again - nothing said about the filtering devices being used on modern diesels - where do they get these numpty reporters from that obviously know nothing about the subject
