I remember trolley busses, in fact I remember trams, sad they have gone although there are a number of places where they have been installed again. The museum at Crich Derbyshire is worth a visit as is Beamish where you can ride round all day for nothing once you have paid your entrance fee.

Re: Moving on, finally!
I visited Crich many years ago (venue for a Rover P6 rally). Think I still have the "1d" tram ticket somewhere!

Re: Moving on, finally!
Interesting, with its better power to weight ratio than a car I would have thought it ideal for electric power, maximum torque at zero revs has got to be good for performance.

They race electric bikes at the TT now and they are very fast.

DIY Electric Car circuitry, 1972-4 US Patent
There must be at least two folk out there (well, three, including myself) who would just love to build something around this, if only we could convince ourselves...
https://docs.google.com/viewer?url=pate ... 809978.pdf
and the circuit diagram, annotated a little:

It makes interesting* reading - and not a semiconductor in sight!
* This is, of course, open to debate.

It certainly doeswhite exec wrote:It makes interesting* reading

Good! Suits me perfectlywhite exec wrote:and not a semiconductor in sight!

The basis of an electric Xantia maybe..
Could be a great retirement project...

Well powering the suspension has been worked out (to some extent)

Re: Moving on, finally!
Diodes are semiconductors
That's the sort of circuit diagram I like - wouldn't mind if it had some valves in it though.

Re: Moving on, finally!
That's the three of us
accounted for, then.
Quite right, Mr.N., there are some wicked diodes in there. Perhaps we could substitute metal rectifiers...?
To be honest, if it weren't for the real difficulty with affordable and suitable batteries, I might have given something like this a go a long time ago - but with something a bit more lightweight than a Xantia, Jim. Now didn't the original Mini weigh in at just 1210lb (550kg), and that was with its petrol engine? IIRC, the 1100/1300 was only 1800lb, lump included. Herald would be tempting, but would probably collapse under the weight - and they never got the pedals in the right place on those.
Hydralastic under batteries . . . now that should ride well.
Or a BX . . ? Plenty of plastic on those.
