Re: North Coast 500
Yes, our NC500 run is only six weeks away now . . . Sat 3 to Sun 9 September . . . Ft.William to Inverness
viewtopic.php?f=24&t=56337&hilit=NC500& ... 35#p529764
Would be really good if we could add to our numbers - currently just Davie and myself. It promises to be a very special week, so if any of the Maybees (or anyone else) is tempted, now's the time!

Re: North Coast 500
To help anyone out here is the route we are taking along with the mileages.
Sunday 3rd September
Meet at Fort William, approx 1200 midday.
Monday 4th
Trip up Aanoch Mor then head up the A82 to Invergarry, turn left on A87 to Auchtertyre, turn right on A890 to Strathcarron, turn left onto A896 to Applecross. 101 miles
Tuesday 5th
Go north on unclassified to Shieldaig, left on A896 to Kinlochewe, left on A832 to Gairloch and Poolewe, keep on A832 to Braemore, left on A835 to Ullapool. 118 miles.
Wednesday 6th
Continue on A835, turn left on A837 to Lochinver, B869 around point of Stoer, left on A894 to Laxford Bridge, left on A838 to Durness.113 miles
Thursday 7th
After a trip out to Cape Wrath east on A838 and A836 to Thurso 72 miles.
Friday 8th and Saturday 9th
East to John o Groats, then South to Wick and Inverness with an overnight stop along the way, or possible direct to Inverness, not decided yet. 159 miles.
That leaves plenty of time for sightseeing, exploring or just chilling out along the way, or deviating off that route along the way if there are other places folk want to see along the way. So far it is just myself and Chris, I'm really hoping we gat some others coming along

My mind says yes but my debit card and employer says no.
Oh and the cars buggered.

I feel sorry for you guys organising such a top trip and only the 2 of you. I am tied with fishing (constantly) and going in different directions.
Got to urge those who are not familiar with this terrain and topology to take advantage. The midges are going by that time and the light can be spectacular for photo opps. What is your route over here Chris?

Re: North Coast 500
Never been to Scotland and that is not likely to change.
Where I work all the products are named after Scottish Lochs (with the exception of Edinburgh & Dundee).
I was a bit perplexed the other day with "Lundy" which I thought was a sea area (Lundy-Cromarty-Tyne-Dogger etc.)
Which led to the Shipping Forecast
Still not coming to Scotland.

The route of the trip is 5 posts above Lexi, its not the official nc500 route but close. It was started at FortWilliam for those coming from the south, which is 50% of us just now lol. If you are asking chris his route to FW then I have no idea!
Im with you, its amazing scenery, was made september to still be ok weather hopefully and midge free, but still enough light in the evenings for exploring.

Re: North Coast 500
My route is just a tad longer than Davie's...
Leave Sayalonga (Malaga region) on Tuesday morning
Stop overnight Burgos, northern Spain
Next overnight stop is near Poitiers, western France
Catch Channel ferry at Caen
Arrive Portsmouth, 5 hours later
Stop with family in Bordon, Hampshire for a day
Leave Bordon, via M6 etc to Stirling, overnight there.
Then the real nice driving can start (actually, crossing Spain is rather enjoyable - empty and fabulous motorways):
Stirling - Trossachs - Crianlarich - Tyndrum - Rannoch Moor - Glencoe - Ballachulish - Fort William
Davie has promised to have a cup of tea for me when I get to Ft.William.
We might even meet under the clock at the train station.
So, just a tad under 2000 miles to get to the Start.
It's what XMs were built for, after all.

Re: North Coast 500
Same here on both counts
I'd have loved to have joined you all on the NC500 but for the reasons you all know...
I'd still love to visit Scotland one day though... The scenery looks just so stunning and I've read some very alluring accounts of cycling in Scotland...
Depending on how my planned distance bike rides go next year I may just satisfy my desire to complete a LEJOG...

If you ever do manage to visit Scotland Jim I will get you to service Gabriel lolol.
Seriously though I will happily volunteer to be a guide and back up vehicle for all the cycling you will undoubtedly do.

Re: North Coast 500
Just put him and the bike on the train (overnight sleeper - always plenty to look at if you can't), and then let him enjoy Glen Torridon, Glen Coe, and the odd sunset.
Train, bike, scenery, IAM support-team . . . gotta be good.

Re: North Coast 500
Absolutely and a trip in a sleeper is always something I've wanted to do since I was a kid...
You and Davie have given me ideas Chris
And Davie, giving Gabriel a service would be no problem at all... I'd love to...
This has got me thinking....

It sounds like a good plan to me.
Scotland's amazing, haven't been for a long time but I'm fond of the place.
