As has been said above, there is a known issue with the sliding doors, in your case it's down to one of the actuating link rods from the handle. The clips that grip them aren't too good and the rod slips through them, with the door panel off it's a very easy fix.

The doors should open in one go. The problem is probably strained outer handles or linkages. There are two types of handle. The older one, you pull out and then slide the door. They were prone to being strained but any mechanic should be able to set up the linkage again so the doors open easily. The later ones, you just pulled/pushed them in the direction you wished the door to move. The problem might also be just down to the locks needing a good oiling.
The brakes were as conventional as could be and shouldn't be spongy. As you called the car a synergie I assume it is a right hand drive (thanks Harlequin). This means that the master cylinder is on the passenger side. Make sure that the linkage appears ok. Do the brakes need bleeding?
If you look up the euro nap test you will see that for its time it was a very solid safe car. Later ones lot marked down because of the armrests which were added to the front seats. Not all models had ABS brakes.
