Sounds similar to a fairly common fuse box fault on Mk6 Escorts, where water ingress/corrosion inside the 'box caused the ECU to lose several IGN live feeds, thus causing it to not recognise the key/disarm the immobiliser. We cured that by simply adding a new (fused) ignition live feed to the te erminals that were missing it.

Might be a quicker/cheaper fix to just do the same on the 406 (add a fused IGN live to pin 4) rather than tracing a potential wiring/fusebox problem.

Thanks again to all.

3 different relays fitted , no improvement.

As Wheeler says , with ignition on , pin 10 goes to earth.

However, on a 3 relays, pins 1,2 and 9 do not come live.

If we leave the relay connected and from the back we cross pin 8 with pin 9 , pins 1 and 2 come live (again as Wheeler said) and all is good - car starts.

Yes, we are thinking of adding another simple relay which fires when the ignition is turned on and connects pin 8 and 9.

Before that we will clean the terminals one more time.

Thanks for all the help and a Happy New Year to all. :-D :-D :-D

Hello again to all - problem solved - or rather - worked around. :? :?

Cleaned all terminals with a mini-file , still no go.

Wired in a relay.

Power in from terminal 8 and out to terminal 9.

Power in to relay switching from terminal 15 (+) and terminal 10 (-) .

With ignition off , relay is dormant.
Ignition on - terminal 10 goes to earth , fires relay which fires terminal 9.

All good. She runs nicely.
All terminals shielded in heat shrink insulation.
Not the most satisfying repair, but at least the car is back on the road.

However, started it this morning and now another issue - will start a new post as its not BSI related.

Big big thank you to all who helped and showed an interest. =D> =D>

Good job done, would you rather be a purist or have your car back on the road again?

True Peter - one less brick in our rucksack, apart from the fact that it is now "tappety" under 1000rpm.
The work is never-ending.................

Oh these cars do like to keep us on our toes, but then wouldn't we get so bored if they were always working perfectly? Agree with Peter that a running 406 is much nicer than a 100% factory spec 406 garden ornament. Good job, and hope the engine issue proves simple/cheap to sort. Might just be in need of a good oil/filter change or a flush & change after sitting idle.
