The advantage (if it works) of the hammer and chisel technique is that it also shocks the sphere, which can help break them loose.

I might well resort to that, I have a nice big cold chisel!
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(
My past Citroens :-
'00 Xantia SX HDI, now dead due to accident :(

I can confirm it works but you need a big punch too. use the cold chisel to raise a lip and then use a punch on the lip to do the rest else you’ll find a chisel just makes the lip bigger and bigger and wastes energy in enlarging the lip rather than getting the sphere loose...

I use a 4lb club hammer behind the punch...

Thanks for the tip, I have a punch too. Also a dead blow steel hammer that tends not to take prisoners!!
Now using '00 Xantia LX HDI, pov spec :(

Make sure to smack the chisel/punch squarely upon the head, and NOT upon the thumb!

My Cars: Citroens since 1990, BX Diesel, GTI, TZD with 1.9 TD running extra boost before it was fashionable!, ZX Volcane TD, S2 Xantia break 1.9TD, Xantia HDI 110, currently zipping about in a C2 Diesel. C2 died from the dreaded worm, C3 Picasso HDI Exclusive, the adventure continues.

If the ram persists in trying to turn then ballast in the boot is what you need, my personal record is a family of four perched in the boot while I belaboured the stuck spheres!
BXs since 1993 built 1.9 TZD turbo, got a S2 Xantia estate, brilliant car! 2013, Xantia HDI LX 110 2000 new car with 122,000, l C2 HDI Rusty rocket, C3 Picasso HDI new to me.
