Re: Xsara suspension leg pinch-bolt siezed
Aren't those bolts actually a pentagon socket bolt? Or am I thinking of something else?

Re: Xsara suspension leg pinch-bolt siezed
I have a feeling they were pentagonal on (some) BXs; these will be T55. No need to remove them though, just the ones to lift the caliper off that you would undo to change the pads. They look a bit manky though, so I would be tempted to get them out whilst the hub is on the bench and you've got room to attack, it will make life easier when it comes to disc change!

Re: Xsara suspension leg pinch-bolt siezed
Cheers all, the underbody is very rusty for a 2003 car - previous owner acquired a free car from his parents, who seem to have cherished the car for about 7 years, looks like it's been abused since with a daily drive down a dirt track to and from work

Re: Xsara suspension leg pinch-bolt siezed
Well job is finished now ... hopefully anyway got a few more bits to sort for the MoT ...
In the end I persevered with the in-situ drilling we'll never know if the bolt would have drifted out or not but take a look at the later stages and you can just see the edge of the bolt that remained (at about 2 o' clock in the hole) .... cant be more than 1/5 of it left in but it wasn't budging in my opinion .....
Thanks RichardW and Chinkostu for your advice which I ignored in my ignorance.
Next time I'll know the preferred way and leave the pinch-bolt well alone ... tough bugger THEY were right

Re: Xsara suspension leg pinch-bolt siezed
Is the balljoint on those riveted/bolted into the wishbone on those? Golfs actually come apart there.
Re the big nut, when I was a scrapyard enthusiast I would drill a couple of holes in the nut on the thinner part and split it with a sharp chisel, I used to regularly snap breaker bars until a grateful customer gifted me a Halfords Professional one, I still snapped those but at least the guarantee meant that I wasnt paying! they have now changed the design for a stronger one. Has your car been working as a taxi in a salt mine?

Stewart(oily)
The ball joint is bolted onto the wishbone. Good deal on the Halfords bar might have been a better idea with that guarantee.
The more I get under it the more work I see ...
Insurance quote surprisingly dear at £90 more than my HDi Xantia
