His name was Dr Mike Beetham, who I believe headed up nothing less than academic computing services for the OU, back in the 80s. Lived in Bradwell Common area of MK, iirc.
He actually founded the P6 Rover Owners Club, with four other guys, in 1982. I took over chairmanship from Mike, and membership reached just over 4500. Plenty of monthly regional noggin meets, and rallies in UK and Europe. 70-100 cars not unusual at UK rallies; best we ever did was 450ish, at Ally Pally in 1988 (25th Anniversary of 1963 launch).
Don't get me going on Rover, or P6. Bad for your sleep. [-X

Even had a proper Somerset registration John :D

Funnily enough I've loved the P6 ever since I was a lad, just started secondary school. I remember one of my teachers having a very early B or C plate baby blue 2000...

I also remember our doctor had a DS in much the same colour at around the same time... Must have been around 1970 or 1971..

Small world...reckon the house you're on about is just across the road from us! Big glass fronted wedge of a building. Was seen in the film The Fourth Protocol too. Some really interesting architecture in Bradwell Common courtesy of the HomeWorld 81 expo! Ours is one of the places built for that, commissioned by none other than the BBC in this case, having featured in the Money Programme when they were looking at Eco-Homes of the future. Sadly haven't managed to track down a copy of the show yet.

Driverless cars are coming no matter what we say but my question is "How will the 'navigator' the one that sits in one of the other seats cope.............(talking to the the car) "You are just not listening to me, I said left not right......right!!"

Image

Other people that coul dbe made made redundant.
Police officers with speed cameras...........
Speed camera manufacturers & those involved servicing them - Driverless cars will not speed.
Parking wardens - Driverless cars will only park where they should.
Driving instructors - The new test will be, how to unlock and get in, tell the car where you want to go then get out again.
Car insurance personel - All cars should have the same insurance, the likelyhood of accidents is nil.
any more??

I think Mike's house was this one...
http://www.houseplanninghelp.com/what-i ... 1981-have/
#1 Ideal Home Solar House
A double garage was on the north side; one P6 in there, and another outside, iirc.
None of the other (three?) houses in the street had a garage; it was thought not part of the future :? .

Small world indeed!

Yep, that's the one I was thinking of. The engineer in me does wonder how much of the original hardware is still there.

You'll be wanting one like this then James - he has voice activation, a laser fitted, gas jets, touch screen to activate the doors and lights - and wait for it Pacman!

I don't know if it's me but the photos you post are just shiny black squares on my screen.

Just about the same for me, except I don't even get the benefit of colour to show me where the pic *would* have been, it's just blank white space :(

Sadly I think the DVLA system is not 100% reliable on cars that may have been scrapped before SORN and continuous registration came into effect, not to mention before scrap prices rose, since so many were simply either burned out/dumped in rivers or (as we did with an old T plate mini van in about 1993) chopped up into 6 chunks and taken cheekily down the rubbish tip in the back of a land rover... The tip used to have a sign stating no cars, things were so different back then so sadly it's highly likely any car not shown as taxed this millennium has already met it's fate albeit unofficially.

Of course I do hope it's one of the exceptions and is quietly in somebody's barn waiting to make a glorious return some time in the near future, at least if it is now dead you don't have it's blood on your own hands, as it was obviously good enough for someone to run for another 4 years after yourself. (better than that poor mini van did when I was of similar age!!! How differently some of us would act if we knew then what we know now, I'd love to have that tatty old heap in my garage now...)

Cars without steering wheels? Sounds perfectly reasonable. Most manufacturers seem to have already done away with indicators....if the drivers round my way are anything to go by. Steering wheels would be the next logical step, as their use also appears to be becoming more and more erratic . :-(

:rofl2: Don't get me started - must be my OCD kicking as often when I go out I start counting the number of drivers that don't indicate - especially going into and coming off roundabouts - it stresses me out big time! Rarely come back from a drive without a rant nowadays. :!:
