Its all down to price really, if its half or less normal price go for it but anywhere retail give it a miss. I bought my last two 406s for £400 and £350 respectively, both tidy cars, 11 months MOT on one 3 months on the other, and I think they both have new clutches, I looked at about a dozen and I could have paid £1000 or more for the same thing.

If you could afford to put a new engine in it out of what you are saving go ahead.

In view of the previous post (which I have only just noticed) I would think £200-300 tops.

Looking at it logically, 11 years old, if it has been on the road all that time you are lookiing at about 18,000 miles a year, now a diesel car with high mileage should be serviced, well oil chnaged every 12,500 miles (ish) and I would assume as it is still going this must have happened, as for no MOT, it could be that the seller does not want to put it in because he may not sell it.
If I would you, yes, ears, eyes, nose works fine but also, look at teh number plate, if it is legal you will see the at least the last supplier, or even if you are lucky the original seller, or just a post code, ask them for history. I think this has been a reps car, long motorway journeys and looked after.
I have had three cars where this approach worked.
1, XM 2.0 petrol (bought at about 80,000 miles, 4 years old) - found out that it had a few extras that were added and point of sale - the dealer didi not know. Sold on at 145,000
2, C5, MK1, 2.2 hdi (bought at about 83,000 miles, 3 years old) - found out it had a number of repairs carried out under warranty - front suspension leg replaced, part exchanged at 150,000 miles.
3, C5 MK 2, 2.0 Hdi ( bought at 35,000 miles, 4 years old) - found out it has had a new steering wheel assembly due a squeak.
Its all out there, just ask.
Good luck
If no luck with the postcode bit, just take the reg no. to you citroen dealer, they may help, especially if they think they may get some work from it - perhaps hint MOT required

I would only be offering £100 for it, and the body and interior would have to be good at that. It could take many hundreds to mot, or it could take nothing. I would have to thing worst case scenario, which would be scrap it, and scrappies up here aren't paying for cars unless you drive them into their yard under their own power the last time I asked.

The car is at a dealer so think that the no MOT is a big flag for me.

The car is on gumtree and part of me is looking at it and thinking IF as the car needs to be ready to go on wednesday night to Friday at the latest.

So can any one find me a cheap C5 estate near London?

Thinking of going for a cheap mondeo

Plenty of decent sized reliable cars about with short MoT or rough bodywork for a couple of hundred quid if it's just for short term, Mondeo could be a good one as there's plenty about or Vectra. Boring cars but I've had 3 cheap Vectra B's now (all between £200 & £500) and all have been good reliable motors with decent kit and comfortable for long trips.

The last, £500, one I made a profit on as well. It was a 1.6 LS found as a trade in from a franchised garage back lot and turned out to be a one owner full history car & at the time I finished with it the non-franchised trade was desperate for decent private stock as auctions weren't turning up much. Had a month or so free motoring and sold it to a trader on ebay for £580 so well pleased.

There should be a fair few later B's and C's on the market with rough bodies but sound cars and it's probably the model I'd go to again if I wanted a cheap temporary load lugger/mile muncher with little chance of major dramas along the way. (also the older Vaux diesels have a similar oil cooler setup to some PSA cars which can net you a cheapie with suspected head gasket failure only to bypass the cooler and run forever more)

Have ended up buying from a trader(ish) a mondeo estate...came from an auction and at a price that I happy with part of me is now thinking I should have gone cheaper.

Collecting tomorrow and actually get to drive it. So will see what happens.
