Well just an update for anyone who may be suffering similar problems, my mechanics diagnostic machine (not sure which type) said the fuel rail was grounding to earth. Upon closer inspection he found that some cables had not been put back in their protective conduit following a clutch change.

The gear linkage was then rubbing on this cabling and had worn through and was causing an earth, which in turn flashed up the anti pollution fault.

I know many people have thrown a load of cash at their car/van trying to track down this fault, luckily my fault was fairly easy to diagnose.
