It is only needed to loosen the cap when you put the car in the air with the wheels hanging free. Not when using the controls to raise and lower the car with the wheels on the ground....

I think you're misunderstanding me, you don't need to remove the cap when raising and lowering the suspension. You should remove the cap when the car is being lifted up on a hydraulic ramp (like at the garage) but where they put the lifting points on the sill jack points for example and lift the vehicle off the ground, with the wheels hanging unsupported. This is where the wheels will pull the fluid through the system from the reservoir and the wheels can extend further than they would on the high setting. If it is being lifted on a ramp where the car is 'driven' on, and the wheels are supported, then not a problem .

I have forgotten which way the pistons turn.. is it always clockwise ?
Although reading this suggests the pistons don't wind in ..after all there is no handbrake in the fronts
