Yes....but follow the BSI reset procedure when you do it.

How old is the battery ?

I'm a little confused, firstly the battery seems ok the car starts well? If it is the battery can't I charge it in situ without the complicating disconnecting routine? This shunt, is it in the fuse box in the glovebox or under the bonnet and how do I recognise it?

The shunt fuse is in the engine bay, check your handbook for the correct position.

The procedure is not complicated and only takes a few steps, it will however reset the BSI and all the other ECU's.

I strongly recommend you do it and follow the steps.
Think of it like resetting a PC and all its hard drives.....The X7 is a complicated car full of various ECU's and this often clears "faults" and bad settings.

Do you have a handbook for the car ?

The economy mode exists to prevent extra electricity consumption for the most of the car's electronics, so that you can turn the engine without problems when needed

The following link takes you to a diagram for a 2008 C5 interior fuse box. The SHUNT is marked as SH;

If your were to do a Google search for "Citroen C5 interior fuse box XXXX" with the XXXX being the year you should get images that are better suited for your C5.

David, what is it exactly that you want to do? If you want to charge the battery, you can charge it on the car.
I'm not sure what you want to do with the SHUNT - but if you are going to disconnect the battery or power from your car, you should wait at least 12 minutes from switching off the engine, as you have the AL4 gearbox and this allows tiome for the ECU to memorise parameters and sleep.

The OP has said its a 2004 meaning it will be a mk1. This also means that battery condition doesn't affect economy mode, its purely a timer.
I reckon this is either one of 2 things, The shunt is in the wrong position or the BSI is in showroom mode, you would need Lexia or Diagbox to change this function. They can be set like this for (funnily enough) being in the showroom so when people are constantly opening & closing the doors to have a nosey the interior lights don't keep coming on & flattening the battery.
The shunt is in the interior fusebox, it looks slightly different from the other fuses & has SH marked on it.
Your fusebox/BSI may look a bit different to this but it gives you an idea. Some can be fitted in 2 different positions.
This is of course assuming ALL the fuses are good.

I’m trying to get the interior light to come on when a door is opened without the engine running. It was suggested that altering the position of the shunt could cure the problem, which I’ve tried but it will not fit in the alternative position!

Ok, so just to be clear:

If you have the trim level with the map reading lights, you basically have three buttons as per diagram below and ditto in the rear.
So 'A' is the map reading spots - and these will ONLY power on with the engine running / ignition on.
'B' is the interior lights. The toggle settings are wither permanently on or only on when the doors are opened.

So you have confirmed these are working with the engine on, so that rules out the wiring.
Now I can't remember exactly - but many moons ago I do remember having a similar issue come to think of it.

I'm not sure, but I think I had to get in the car, open the door and press button 'B', then shut the door - or something like that to get it to come on or off when the doors were opened. It was toggling this option with the door open that seemed to fix it for me, but is was years ago now, but may be worth a shot. And if it doesn't work - try again with the ignition on.

^^ Had a similar experience after the kids had been away in the car and fiddled with everything, thought they had blown a bulb initially but then realised the rear light was the same.

When I first got my car I thought the interior light was on permanently at one point so pushed button b to turn it off. Next time I went to the car it never came on again until I pushed the button then normal auto/courtesy function was restored.

I’ve tried holding the on button on whilst foot open to no avail. I’m sure it’s this ‘economy’ setting which is the problem. Someone said that the shunt in the glovebox fuse block should be changed position but the alternative doesn’t fit

Ignore that about the shunt - that is for 'Show Room' mode setting and involves connecting a special electrical harness to the car and removing certain fuses, connecting up the harness and replacing other fuses - it's really for supplying the car with external power to maintain the lights, dash displays and other functions without allowing the car to be started and also requires the diagnostic tool to programme. This setting won't be the cause.

I'm now suspecting that it may be one of the wiring connections to / from the driver's door module that is at fault. We know the light works when switched on manually with engine running.

Can you confirm, that with engine running when the doors are opened that the courtesy lights come on? and secondly, with engine still on, after closing the door that it goes off after a few seconds? If the light does not come on with the doors open and the engine running, then it is likely a broken wire into the door module somewhere.
I'll consult the wiring diagrams.
