Fingers crossed ;) Certainly plenty of 'interesting' wear on the old ones....

Do make sure to use the right oil on the gearbox (BV75W80), otherwise it may well show its' disapproval. GSF should have Total BV 75W80 for around £10 per litre (you will need 2 litres, well, 1.8l).

Cheers guys
Just putting it together now.

Any idea on the torque of that end shaft nut? :)

Oh do I lock the gears while tightening?

Thanks

FT in answer to your first question and ensure the locking device on the nut is working and in place. To the second question - yes. To lock, just engage two gears at once.. 5th and one other but not reverse...

By the way

I've tested her
.. annnnnd

SHE'S FIXED!!!!

:D

Although she's not been used for 6 months.
And so now has developed an air leak in the fuel supply.
Revs kept dying every time I lifted off accelerator at roundabouts :(

And there's a new noise when I break or use full lock on power steering
Sounds like a kazoo
Thinking hydraulic oil pump maybe. . Hmm

But I've got fifth gear back! ! :)

Excellent! Well done!

The noise on full lock is just entrained air in the system... It should soon dissipate...

It could be worth doing a full set of Citrobics to help clear any air from within the hydro pneumatics (and make sure to do several lock to lock steering actions) making sure to wait at each end of a cycle for a minute or so to allow things to settle (including the steering).

If you want the back brakes to get a workout during this, hold down the brake pedal then move the height lever to one service position (fully high or fully low), and then hold it for about 15 seconds after the car has stopped moving (the back will NOT move, unless the brakes are badly worn). Hang onto something, then release the brake pedal. The back end will rapidly move to the relevant height position (a LOT quicker than normal). Once things have stopped moving, hold down the brake pedal, move the height lever to the other end, and repeat. Doing this during the Citrobics sessions makes sure the rear brakes get a decent workout (as they are normally only lightly used, due to the way the Xantia is set up).

You were right about the noise Jim, it slowly cleared.

It all went back together really quite easily, including the spring and ball bearing on the selector fork actuator, that just needed to be pushed down with a screwdriver, (I was quite happy it didn't fire off into the darkness never to be seen again ~ phew!)

I would go through the Citrobics (haha), James, but a new issue has suddenly cropped up.
I got in the car after a day or so running and noticed I've got slippery clutch pedal.
Thought I spilt some grease on it.
Nope it got/getting worse.

I'm trying to figure out without tasting it, if it's citroblood or coolant leaking from under the dash dashboard by the steering coulomb then down onto the pedals.
Clutch and brake are rather slippery now :(

Last time the heating matrix went, I think it was the passenger foot well that filled up.
This is new.

Then just this morning the STOP warning lights started to flicker.
(I topped up the hydraulic reservoir just before starting to run the car.)

I'm wondering if it's the green blood now.

Any ideas what's up under the dashboard above the drivers feet that might be leaking?

These extra issues must be aggravated from the car being abandoned for six months from a hot summer to this cold winter. She was fine, bar the fifth gear before I pulled the handbrake up six months ago :p

~ (wish I had more space to park a further spare vehicle. I saw another one of these on ebay with half the miles for £350! Looked mint. Humph.)

Cheers for ideas!

Doseur valve's up there i believe. Could be dripping lhm. There's a lot of posts on the forum as your 'starter for 10'. Can someone confirm my thinking please.

Romie,

There are hydraulic pipes which run along the bulkhead to the brake valve, they're not prone to rust and also the off side strut.

I can't think of any other hydraulic pipes in that area.

Kenny

Xantiamanic I see you have suggested the same area.
