I've got to say, I'm disappointed with the attitudes towards old cars on this forum.

It's not an attitude, it's a fact.FOAD wrote:I've got to say, I'm disappointed with the attitudes towards old cars on this forum.

Luckily I've got a safe, reliable and modern vehicle to use as well as the 305.

So you're seriously telling me that a pre-1990 305 is anything like as safe as a modern car?FOAD wrote:Wow, just wow.

Of course not, the point I was trying to make was that the attitudes and views towards running an old car were disgusting, telling the OP he should get a Berlingo and the old cars are unreliable etc.BenC5HDi wrote:So you're seriously telling me that a pre-1990 305 is anything like as safe as a modern car?FOAD wrote:Wow, just wow.

Pretty much everyone who's told the poster to get a modern for carting his kids around in for safety reasons and reliability reasons *owns* at least one or two old Citroens or Peugeots. They know what they're talking about..FOAD wrote:Of course not, the point I was trying to make was that the attitudes and views towards running an old car were disgusting, telling the OP he should get a Berlingo and the old cars are unreliable etc.BenC5HDi wrote:So you're seriously telling me that a pre-1990 305 is anything like as safe as a modern car?FOAD wrote:Wow, just wow.

Re: RE: Re: RE: Re: Peugeot 305 gld estates??? Much needed advice please
I'm sure they do, What the OP was looking for was anyone who currently owns a 305 and uses it daily, I wish I had spotted this thread sooner I could have saved all the drama and answered his questions. Can you use a 305 as a daily? Yes you can! Whether any of you lot think it's safe to do so is beside the point. I'm sure the OP has considered the safety aspect of running an old car. As for not being able to use classics for daily drivers due to them being unreliable - What a load of nonsense.BenC5HDi wrote:Pretty much everyone who's told the poster to get a modern for carting his kids around in for safety reasons and reliability reasons *owns* at least one or two old Citroens or Peugeots. Re: Peugeot 305 gld estates??? Much needed advice please
How good are these engines? - Very good
How safe is the vehicle on the whole ? - Not as safe as a modern but not a cause for concern
Are they viable everyday drivers? - Yes
What's the fuel economy like on a 1.8 - 50-60 mpg
Does anyone have experience of using car seats for the children with them?? - Cant answer that one sorry.

Re: Peugeot 305 gld estates??? Much needed advice please
The OP stated "I need a safe ultra reliable and economical car for the family and a 140 mile round trip commute and I have two under 18 months so I have to be able to securely fit baby/toddler car seats".
"Point me in the right direction please"..
He also asked "how safe is the vehicle as a whole?"
Anyone who thinks an 80s Pug fulfills those criteria, and is even remotely safe in comparison to what is available modern, for similar money really should go and do some research. Start by watching some 80s crash tests and comparing them to modern ones.

Really? I'd suggest some viewing of 80s versus 00 and on crash tests...FOAD wrote: How safe is the vehicle on the whole ? - Not as safe as a modern but not a cause for concern

I don't plan on crashing thanks, If you're referring to the video of the head on between the volvo estate and modern car, I'm sure a lot of cars would crush the way the volvo did if they also had their engine removed before the test.BenC5HDi wrote:Really? That's the typical answer of a blinkered classic car fan! YOU might not plan on crashing, but that doesn't stop someone crashing into you...[emoji57]FOAD wrote:I don't plan on crashing thanks, If you're referring to the video of the head on between the volvo estate and modern car, I'm sure a lot of cars would crush the way the volvo did if they also had their engine removed before the test.BenC5HDi wrote:Really? I'm referring to proper, EuroNcap crash tests, and official crash tests. Not some drivel off 5th gear.

While nothing said up to now strays outside the boundaries of "Energetic Discussion and opinions" please think before you post and don't get too far off the beaten track.

I just don't see what the issue is with using an 80's car as a daily driver.
