70000 moles?!
What the hell are you doing in 5 years with 70'000 moles, I don't know if I should buy a gun, stock up on food and board over the windows ready for the invasion or call the RSPCA!

Edit, beat me to it!

The only "thing" I dislike about too modern cars is the complexity of the mechanicals. A reasonable example would be HDi vs XUD injectors, to be fair the 2.0 HDi ones are fine, its more a (to be again, fair) 'slight' concern with the 1.4 and 1.6 units, not to mention their cost...

Com2000 units, the earlier ones are / were a bit problematic, they seemed to be a lot better after about 2004 though for some reason.

Cheers

By the way I'm not being funny. To true the kids in an emergency etc and the type of things that happened with your brother all have to be taken into account.

I will certainly be looking into the cars you have all suggested

What's the fuel economy like on a 1.8
Dan
Hi and welcome to the Forum.

The XUD engines are fantastic and were fitted to a large range of Peugeot Citroen vehicles, mine's in my 405 estate and, done 240k and is going strong; but 405's are rare now. The wiki page on the PSA XUD is useful.

Mine still does 15,000 a year and returns 48mpg on average.

High mileage isn't an issue but look for venting from the oil filler when running and for any evidence of cooling issues.

Peugeot diesels' main achilles heel is Head Gasket trouble and a number of the models suffer from rear axle trouble.

Peugeot / Citroen also tend to rust proof bodies better than many others.

A further tip, check the MOT History on the DVLA website if you're serious about a particular car, especially re structural issues

Do you need an estate?
Thinking not later than mid 1990's stuff (I don't wanna go any later than that)....
Some 205's (XUD) are starting to look retro and values are rock bottom.
106 Mk1's (TUD) are now uncommon and fuel economy is just amazing (60+ mpg average), you'll find a Mk2 easier but the styling is boring
306's (available in estate form) and 309's (XUD) are also becoming uncommon

Can't answer your questions bout safety & child seats but can't imagine any of these are likely to be below average.

Edit: don't overlook the Citroen ZX either. Deeply unloved these days with values to match, and available in estate form. (Conventional suspension on these)

Look at this. Modern tin box vs older heavy duty tank.

I agree with the above, for a daily driver ALWAYS go for the highest NCap car, no question if carrying kids however, if you are a parent you need to protect yourself for them as well.

As an example, Xantia score 1 star, the little C2 scores 4

I learned to drive in a 305, an X Reg that was owned by my dad from new and very well maintained.

It was sold in 1987 with iffy gear selectors and rust on the front subframe that was pointed out when he traded it in.

I would love to own one.

But the 405 is a much better car in every way to be honest.

And after a decade in the Ambulance Service you want crumple zones, seatbelt pre tensioners, airbags and ABS for daily duties.

If I ever get a 305 it will be for special occasion and sunny day use only.

A mate had just bought a Peugeot J7 and converted it into a sandwich/coffee bar.

It runs well enough but get trailered to events.

Not just because if you get hit en-route you lose takings but because he drove it to the storage yard and it scared him.

It looks lovely though.

I think you're mad using a 305 as a everyday car with your kids. I hope nobody in a modern car runs into you. The odds are stacked against you however. Good luck.

My 305 is a daily driver. I've done 8000 trouble free miles in the last year.

Yes. I agree completely. This is why there's no old tat on my drive any more. Old cars are made out of Swiss cheese, safety wise compared to a modern.
