No way I would do that. One sharp stop and your a Nan Bread as there are no tie down points. Normal price is £60 for a EURO pallet delivery in the UK up to 1oookg.

Take it from one who transports heavy stuff....it WILL SHIFT !

I use a metal frame with 5 ply which fits into the load bed of the C5, there are 6x metal tie down points welded to the frame and I carry flat stuff which is easy to strap.

Bu@@er!

I'll need a transit or similar then. Whats the all up weight of power unit with mated gearbox? Problem i've got at this end is that i'm a one man band and i've no hoist (yet) although thats not going to stop me [emoji1] I need to be able to back a van far enough into my drive to be able to lift and roll into store.

I can say one thing for sure, You will not lift that engine on your own without a hoist. the other bits should be fine, the gearbox is chancing it but unless your built like The Rock, you wont get the engine out as its got to be at least 150kg I reckon.

If you search locally you may find a hoist hire available for £25 for the day or something.

If you get it palleted up and its £60 for delivery then do that, just requires a wood frame to encase the engine and lots of bubble wrap for the bits as well as it will move around in the box a lot more on the back of a lorry than in a car boot :)

You need a scruffy XM estate really to do the job as that would swallow the engine and gearbox alone with the back seats still up and has some tie down hooks as well :)
Though saying that im sure a Xantia has small tie down hooks in the boot that go straight into the metal boot floor which if the engine were laid over would be just enough with thick straps to stop it flying through the folded up rear seats under an emergency stop...

Team WFA have indeed moved a V6 engine with gearbox attached in the back of an XM Estate with the back seats up and with room to spare!

Hoist is definitely needed...

The boot hooks in the Xantia (and the C5) are WAY to thin/small to stop anything....they will deform and pull out just tightening the straps........designed for shopping. Knowing what I do I would not be happy shutting up on the matter.

If you do use an Estate car, load the engine/box onto a EURO pallet (Not a cheep China s**t wood one) and use that to strap the engine/box/bits to, you have at the very least a secure base to attach the weight to.

Get a pallet (I can give one to Jim if needed), screw wood blocks to it to prevent movement and some straps to secure it down. A roll Industrial film wrap over the bubble wrap would also help keeping it all together.

Alasdairs advice is spot on. I've spent the last year travelling the country overloaded with tools. Anything insecure will attack your car. Worst we've had is a piece of luggage shoot to one side on a corner which kicked out the back of the car. We were very lucky not to crash.

I'd hire a van and buy a hoist. Pallet sounds good and i'm assuming it all gets lifted as one unit. Lower floor with opening rear doors should help. Anyway thats not for just now. Let me think about it. It's going to be a struggle at both ends methinks. I found a google which seems to be saying that engine+box is around 250kg mark. I do st lbs and ozs so whats that in old money?

I'm a fat, 6 ft tall bugger and at my fattest I was 130kg which was about 23 stone. So your 250kg must be about 44 stone. Too heavy to lift unless you are on the world's strongest man programme! As a side note I'm glad I'm nowhere near 23 stone now, even though I still need to lose some!

I'm the opposite then [emoji1]. 12 stone soaking wet so guess i'm not going to be able to just lift it out so a hoist will need to be sourced.

I'm quite happy to bring a pallet up here for you Mike, following Alasdair's kind offer. After all I'm up and down to Somerset like a whore's drawers at the moment...

It'll certainly make life a bit easier if the engine is on one for sure...

Thanks Jim and Sticky .. most kind. What else would be needed to secure it? I'm a complete novice at this game. Looking to get it into a van and up the road as easily and practically as possible when the time comes.

If you got two pallets one could be broken down to use its pieces of wood to secure the lot to the first pallet, then you'd want some lifting straps through the bottom of the pallet and a hoist could then lift it at each end of the trip and keep it neatly in one place.

So the hoist would hoist the pallet AND the engine?

No need yet as I'm not in a position to take them this trip Alastair...

I won't be wanting them here until I have the engine here again, no where to store them...

It'll be a few weeks yet...
