Must be, you have the only manual one. I thought you'd get the highest economy here.
After driving V6 Xantia automatics for 10 years, I currently have an XM with the same engine and manual transmission.

I don't think my driving style has changed much, but I can't get better milage from the manual than the auto. The auto pulls less RPM in top gear than the manual, which might have something to do with it.

what is this ?? "economy"...I do not understand, I will Google it I think

I thought 22mpg was good when the engine lives most of it's life between 4-6k rpm

Same hear it's the hills that crucify it. I'm on 43mpg in a very hilly area and if I'm out on the M4 and fill up I get 50-60 easy on the flat.

I'm surprised, does the same apply to the Hdi? Id rather an auto in an everyday car but avoid them because of repair bills, poor economy etc. I've only ever had one auto and it was in a 2.2 Honda that drank fuel, put me off a bit.

26.4mpg sounds plausible if you're caning it along at 90mph most of the way, although I would have expected a bit more... Depends whether you were cruising at that speed or doing a lot of slowing down and acceleration as well.

The MPG of the Xantia V6 depends highly on the type of driving you do. Unfortunately mine does lots of very short "milk run" type trips most of the time, so it spends most of its time in slow stop start traffic with the engine not warmed up and frequent acceleration from a standing start at junctions, and spends very little time on motorways. In this type of driving I only get 18-20 mpg, typically 20 mpg in warm weather dropping to 18 in winter because of the 5-10 minutes of idling it does while I de-ice. (Yes I'm out with a scraper or can of de-icer while it idles, I don't just wait for the heater to do all the work  )

Recently I had cause to do about 25 trips into Glasgow and back in the space of a week, this is a 10 mile 20 minute journey each way with about half 30mph residential zones with lots of stops and junctions and the other half 50/70mph motorway. I was relatively pushy on the throttle but I managed 27 MPG.

The best ever I achieved on my previous Xantia V6 was 32.8 MPG on an 800 mile road trip with 4 in the car plus luggage travelling 60-80mph most of the time with a moderate amount of acceleration and overtaking. So figures above 30 are possible on a long trip if you drive at a steady speed and don't go mental...

You'll probably also find that you get about 2mpg extra if you use high RON (97-99) petrol instead of 95, as if you use 95 RON the ECU is forced to reduce the timing advance and this timing loss causes quite a bit of efficiency loss. (The compression ratio is 10.5/1)

On both mine I've always found I lose about 2mpg if I try to use 95 RON, which offsets the cost "saving" of the cheaper petrol, and at the same time you lose quite a bit of throttle response and performance especially at the bottom end. So you actually break even going to high RON petrol on this engine and get better performance to boot. At the moment I'm using Tesco Momentum which is 99 RON but also cheaper than Shell/BP premium fuels - it seems to run well on Mometum. Before that I was using Shell V-Power. Personally I would only use Shell V-Power, BP Ultimate or Tesco Momentum in this engine if you care about performance and MPG. I did try Esso's premium petrol recently and the car did not like it at all.

Uh, surely the XM is heavier ? How about an Apples to apples comparison...

My 406 V6 coupe with a manual box would return mid 20's in town and mid 30's on run . Very impressed with it and almost better a 2.2Hdi C5 i used to have .

We should have a reverse table with the lowest mpg ;-)

Surprised the 1.6 HDi is on par with the 2.0 HDi as i thought it was more efficient.

If you care to check the specifications, you may find that the XM is 80 kg heavier than the Xantia. When cruising the Autorotes in the Xantia, I would typically have had 100 kg more luggage than I currently carry in the XM.

It is also worth noting that for motorway cruising, vehicle weight has little effect. Aerodynamics are more important.

Yep....Xantia is a weighty car, the tubbiest one is the S2 Activa with leather as it has the extra crash (door) bars and heavy seats ect.
Also it's ride height is higher than the XM and has tyres that are more exposed to the air as well.

It would be interesting to see the wind tunnel data between the two.
