My Mrs has a 2005 C5 II facelift with the 2.0-litre petrol engine; that rattles on start-up for about a second, if that. It gets Purflux filters and 5W40 synthetic oil.

However, it does consume quite a bit of lube but does not seem to be leaking, or obviously burning it. It goes through about 1/2-3/4 of a litre every 1,000 miles. Just dropped the 5W40 out (at 6.500 miles, totally black) and refilled with 10W40 semi (and a new filter), which will be dropped out in 6K time - I wonder if that will help reduce the oil consumption?

Push the boat out and refill with some 20W-50 next time, and see what happens to consumption then.
Might not be fashionable, but I've run numerous cars on just that to 200k, with no problems. A BX19RD still has its cross-hatching on the bores after 177k.

Hello, the clatter on starting is that the oil has drained out of the tappets, but ceases once these are full.
the thinner the oil the easier for it to drain away.http://www.frenchcarforum.co.uk/forum/p ... =3&t=54813#

Smarty2,

Drain-back is usually down to a filter non-return not working.
Has the filter unit been given an absolute clean bill of health now?

Hi all, thanks for the interest. Yes it has, the filter appears to have done the trick! @Triumphtoledo Yes, I have noticed the same oil consumption too, I think it is a quirk of this engine type my older C5 Mk1 had the same problem even though it was a different engine! When I had the car in 2014 I used Castrol's Magnatec oil which was thicker but having gone back to Ineos which is a lower viscosity maybe that exaggerated the problem? And yes you're right it is more like diesel engine oil when it comes out, black as coal! Even so I am loath to put just any oil in it which goes against the manufacturers recommendation. I mean, engines are designed in a specific way and need a specific oil type like the Siemens auto box it comes with the infamous DP0 (Don't Pollute our Oceans) I believe the automatic transmission people have nicknamed them as they are so kak that's where their dumped!
