Yes it's rusty, but hard to tell from those. Normally they chalk the defective area. Last one I came across that failed MOT on this, the problem was with the front of the subframe. Look out for yellow or white chalk.

Im not familiar in the slightest with this car - but nothing in any of the images screams about to fall apart. Wishbones are the grottiest looking as you said (not actually part of the subframe and not mentioned by the tester), but nothing particularly extreme looking I wouldn't say.

Are the worst patches totally rotten - or is it 95% superficial with some flaking / bubbling? Picture 6 is the only one with a spot that looks like it might be rusted through (the pictures might make it look better / worse than it is, hard to tell without actually being there ). There are however plenty of exceedingly "thorough" mot testers out there, I appreciate the need for it but the first thing I'd do if I were you is head down your local council MOT station and have one there instead - proper impartial test with nobody worried about losing their license and future work. I've sworn by them for years after many questionable MOT's at independent garages (both over cautious and the other way mind you)

If the second opinion says the same then back to the drawing board.

its good to know that ken if you could track one down for me that would be greatly appreciated mate. it would be a shame to let this one go as its a good runner. i'll just get a scrap frame on tell the mechanic that it should be about an hour of labour and see what he says. If i track one down anyway then at least i have the prospect of selling it on as a project.

just missed one that was reconditioned on breaker yard he had it adversed on ebay too and just sold it before i contacted him ! 60 + 17 postage. How heavy and big are those frames I've seen them sitting on pallets the mechanic said if i get one he'll put it in for me and charge me for the labour he uses, so that's all good just need the subframe now

that'll probably be about 50-90 kgs then I was thinking to have it delivered to me so i could check it otherwise i can ship it direct to the garage.

daft question but will it fit in the back of the car

been offered one for £120 all delivered. want to have it come to my house so i can clean it up and paint it before I give it the mechanic but worried that it may be too big for me to move

That sounds like a result. Personally I would go for that. Even if one person can't lift it, I would think one guy could prop it up, or turn it over to clean it and paint it.

stupid question really how will i know its the right subframe ? what should i look out for, any photo/pics dimensions etc will be greatly appreciated

Nothing stupid about that, I've no idea, other than if it's from the same model and same year :-/
