James the software I had in mind is one of the reasons us IT guys get escorted off the premises when we leave a job! It can return a hard drive to "factory condition" in two seconds. I had to run it on my own machine on monday morning,I think it was a virus that caused XP to fall over totally,no restore point available, no safe mode, took me hours to restore everything, still its better then working on my Citroen project in this weather.

Hi Stu.. That sounds like fun, or maybe the dreaded "restore" disks that most PC shops mug people with.. [:0] Incidently I was unable to access "safe mode" either.. But at the time that was a minor prob!! lol.. even 'exit' in DOS came up as 'bad command' [?] lol. Still, all history now. [^]
Nisk, thanks for the link.. I notice no one uses the software I am struggling with? hhmm I think i will read it all and decide which software appears to be most user friendly, then get it! [:D]
The fact that most evaluations were written by a bloke called "Baldrick" doesn't inspire me with confidance though, as I have no "cunning plans" to fall back on. [:I] [:o)] [;)]
At least it will give me something to do untill it gets mild enuff for me to try and sort a prob with my ZX brakes. Self inflicted prob, [:I] I think I did something wrong when fitting Volcane front callipers and aerated disk to my Avantage.. Brakes work fine, but- - - every now and then the pedal free movent changes from approx one inch before resistance is felt to about 4 inches, brakes still work fine though.. but it is a worry! lol.. Makes my bottle twitch a bit!! Have bled a couple of times.. and fluid level is fine, hmm a virus prob maybe? [;)]
Thanks again for the link.. Will now go and see what "Baldrick" recommends... [:D]

Hi Again James,
Most of the guys at that link are very serious - it's just that they like having strange names (reminds you a bit about this forum doesn't it?).

I use ZoneAlarm pro, which have a quarantine feature called MailSafe that changes the extension to .zln on incoming mails with attachments, that matches the quarantin extensions. This .zln can't be executed if you open the mail in preview pane or you try to click on it. Works really nice and you can add your own extensions if you like. Many of the "viruses" have their own mail engines. By using ZoneAlarm, the mail program have to ask for permission to access the net. This way you can answer No and stop spreading to others. You can also set permission on your own email client to ask everytime it's sending an email. This way you have full control what's happening with your mail engine.
Many in this thread have (very good) virus scanners. It's interesting to see that very few mention Sandbox technology. I use Sandbox technology as well as virus scanning. The sandbox have saved me when a virus tried to access my pc via IE (Internet Exploiter...? [:0]). Everything that access my pc (from internet)is placed in a sandbox (quarantin). It's then inspected and I get a warning if a program tries to install itself. By using this sandbox, it does not matter if the virus is unknown, since permission is based on the type of program (email/browser etc etc ) and all programs started within these programs are placed in the sandbox. It really works and it's proactive.
One more thing, I've stopped using IE many years ago. I started to use Opera. Opera is not exposed to all the security holes that IE are. This has saved me alot of trouble. Opera has it's own email client which is really good, it got pop killer as standard (configurable), you can use keyboard (shotcut)for everything, it's FAST, and it got all the searchengines in the toolbar without any extra plugins (with spyware/adware) Give it a try, it's worth it. www.opera.com

I got hit by it when I forgot to start ZoneAlarm. Just once. Was connected for, oh, three minutes. Broke the connection, started ZA, ZA reports "MSblast.exe" attempting to connect. Look it up at the ZA database - OOPS.
Took me about 10 minutes to remove it permanently using the Symantec tool, but it served as a salutory reminder of why I installed ZA in the first place.

Thanks Stewart. You were right, [^] having eliminated all other possibilities its now got to be that, going to fit a new one on thurs, driving with "random" brakes is exciting but its turning my hair grey!! [:0] lol.
Bad news is, while looking for a brake fluid leak, I found an exuast leak so got to get that replaced as well. Good news is the rear rubber mounts look almost new.. [:)] and the underside of the car looks in very good shape. [^]
Anders, I promise I will try to break my habit of working on the car with the engine running, but I love the sound they make. brmm brmm lmho. [:D]

Um,
The last reply really confuses me in context to the "Virus" topic. Does a Virus live in the Zx master cylinder?
Quick, drain it, lots of brake cleaner to finish the blighter off! [:-)]

Hey Anders,
Run Linux on a Mac then you are so far removed from any mass market that the virus cookers could take a lifetime to find your e-mail address for that specially written piece of code :-)) Listening to Oily Spanner and others still in the IT industry makes me glad that I gave it up 15 years ago ;-). The only down side is that I'm still poor :-((. In the 20 years I've been running a Mac I've only had one virus, which I managed to give to a mate working at LT that infected the whole of their then Mac network.
BTW Jon the Virus does not live in your ZX master cylinder but in my rear brake line which sprang a leak on the way home tonight, I'm doomed to fix it outside in the Pi***** rain as that B***** boat is still blocking the entrance to my garage [:)]

Linux on a Mac - Pah! Mainstream.
How about an Ultrix desktop!

Hi, excuse my poking my nose in but odd brake pedal behaviour as you described can be attributed to having reversed the seals in the master cylinder when changing pads......pushing the caliper piston back in with a G clamp etc is fine as long as the bleed nipple is open at the same time, if not you can pretty well guarantee it will reverse the seals in the master cylinder giving the symptoms you describe (ask me how I know, I buggered up 2 mastercylinders before I realised this happens).
Hope this is of some use.
Regards
Nige
