Too wet this afternoon to to anything on the clutch outside so I spent a few enjoyable minutes on the lathe knocking up this custom stubby clutch alignment tool...

Jim ... is that as a replacement for the little blue bit of plastic you see in some kits?

Yes, precisely Mike. The LUK kit doesn't come with one but in the past I've tried the little blue one and the fit is very poor and it's very flimsy.

When doing a clutch as I'm doing it you need a very precise and strong alignment tool...

Weather looks set fairly fair today so going to take a day off and crack on with the clutch job...

Davie, due to the weather forecast for the rest of the week and ongoing work commitments it is unlikely the clutch will be done by this weekend (the X rally) as even when done, because it's been such a major job with so much coming apart I need to fully test and give it a good 'shake-down' before it goes back to you...

I won't be happy until I know it's 100% good...

One significant event this week is Sian's 21st birthday :D

New clutch is fitted :D Alignment tool worked well. You can just see it peeking out in the picture... Enjoying a tea break now before mating the gearbox back to the engine... No chances taken with the clutch cover bolts. All six torqued to 20Nm with a torque wrench... Don't want one of those coming loose!

I did the Malcolm CitroNut trick on the clutch driven plate - I filed the leading edges of the centre splines with a small triangular file and then checked the plate was a very easy sliding fit on the gearbox input shaft... It makes mating the gearbox back to the engine easier...

Well done Jim ... makes good reading. Cant see how you managed to torque all bolts in such a limited space though? By the way ... it's tipping down up here and thats the difference between working on the car and waiting till June arrives!

Sadly, false progress today :( The position in which I had the gearbox to get the clutch in would not allow the gearbox to rise back so that the input shaft would clear the clutch cover without fouling badly...

I then had to remove the new clutch and try and find the position in which the old clutch just dropped out...

Found that but then found it impossible to install the new clutch single-handed... I tried and tried but failed ultimately.. I need some strong assistance and then it'll be OK... Else that I need to grow a few more pairs of arms, some of them very long...

My two arms I have are now scratched to bits

So, for now, until I have some assistance, job on hold... Sorry Davie :(

Don't worry about it Jim. It will be ready when it's ready. It means I just have to split myself into 2 on Sunday instead of 3! And I know which is winning. My grandaughters 2nd birthday party on Sunday. There will only ever be one of them, so that's where I have to be.
