driveshafts off.. always painful no matter how many times you do it..
only damage was the boots on the lower arms. as always..
I did buy a splitter but it doesn't work on the joint.. so the trusty fork does the trick as usual..
one day I will buy the special tools that hold the springs compressed! grr...
:)
that was it for tonight..

gearbox and clutch off.. bit of a mare really.. crane holding gearbox, engine down , gearbox out and down a bit hits sub, engine up, gearbox down, engine up, jiggery pokery and about 30 mins and lowered to the floor.. will be tough getting back together..
the realease was in a few pieces as expected, and the input shaft guide has heavy scoring.
chaps can you remind me about the refit, the release has two tiny plastic tangs.. on the flip side is the bearing.. I think the plastic tangs fit the release arm after box back up there.. so as said I need to pull it onto the arm ..is that sort of right? :)

I may get to refit on Sat.. if I can get the shaft guide from somewhere..

the clutch friction plate looked ok, but a few of the 'valleys' were shallower than others..or a bit like a tyre with tracking out, but only some of them.. I always felt the clutch was anything but smooth to pull away in first, could this slight unven wear be the reason?

thanks ,J

sorry re read the posts from Jim and Richard.. the bearing will clip to the fingers? will think on ;)

chaps , tomorrow is D day for the refit, but I need a bit of guidance on the release bearing.

It looks like I have a push clutch?

Yep, looks like std push clutch. Is this a petrol or diesel? service.citroen does show a pull clutch for the petrol, but never mind, it's what's fitted that counts!! Just clip the release bearing onto the release fork then refit as normal. The one I did like this before, the engagement of the lugs on the release bearing was not very convincing!! Your release fork and guide tube look just like the ones that came out of our C4! This (release bearing failure) seems to be the most likely causeof failure on these clutches. Definitely no holding it on the clutch, or holding it down for long periods to prolong life of the bearing - my 307 is on 110k, so must be getting on borrowed time....

chaps I am confused.. please helllpppp :)
I know this is schoolboy stuff, but without a manual and no release bearing to remove from the car (was in 4 pieces) I am still not 100% on how this goes together..
the fingers are all protruding, assuming the slave cylinder push rod pushes out of the cylinder, this is a push clutch?
if this is a push clutch, the release bearing plastic fingers, do they engage with clutch fingers (after all is back together) or do the clip onto release arm before all is back together?

or is it a pull clutch and the plastic release bearing clips are all the hold the bearing to the fingers and therefore the whole spring of the clutch goes through them ? seems odd

thanks Richard ! :) hmm ..its a petrol 2.0, 60 or 70K and the clutch in there was a valeo..
I think the 206 in 2001 was at a change point, I wonder if this one got an older box and clutch ? does the box look familiar ? it has the 3 rods for the gears, which I remember from xantias etc...

in fact, the clutch looks similar to a 1.8 petrol xant I did years ago, exept that was cable.. lol

Stopped in tracks..after removing the release guide the input shaft has 2 to 3 mm of movement .
What next.. second hand box or gearbox apart to replace..something I have never attempted and don't really want to..

Bugger, said Dougal.... 2nd hand box going to be easier I think! This is a BE4 box which is very similar to the BE3 - there's a guide to stripping it on Jim's website: http://www.eastment.net/be3%20gearbox.htm I guess you will need to remove the shafts from the box to get access to the front bearing. Post up the VIN and I'll get the box details for it.

hi Rich, will have to do vin later.. yes its a be4.
seems odd.. 70K and that much wear? I cant see that I am missing something obvious.. if you pull the shaft out from the box the movement disappears but if anything fitting the box will push the shaft further in..
it seems the guide seal and the flywheel where all the could have prevented radial movement..

well well.. found a box for a 1.6 16v petrol.. and the guy happens to be coming to my town in the morning for a different reason.. 70£ delivered sounds good enough..
its a hydraulic clutch with rod change.. assuming its the right box what about ratios I wonder..

scrub that..
box is different for the 1.6's
I think I am going to refit it all.. and see.. it wasn't making any odd noises, the syncros were good, the oil was good, and its a low mile FSH car.. I hope my diagnosis is wrong somehow.. just seems a bit odd to have that much play...

What sort of bearing is it John? If it's a taper roller then yes, the answer to your question is 'very possibly'

Also, a bit of float there may be deliberate to assist in alignment... I know this to be the case on the Mazda RX-8 'box...

Thanks Jim . I am not sure if it's taper or not.. its a Be4 box.. but there must be 2 or 3 mm of play  or a 'massive amount ' .. the input shaft almost represents a gear stock lol
